I don't see what the fuss is about.  Pretty tame for a young adult book.  IIRC, at the time, I was reading Heart of Darkness, Lord of the Flies, The City of Gold and Lead, The Witches, and 1984.  And I turned out just fine!

When I was in Junior High the school was reading us a book (I for get the name, I want to read it again as an adult) about how these parents tortured their child to death, rape, molestation, etc., this was in the 1990s in a Conservative Christian town on the outskirts of Orlando, FL. Oh, the incident happened in Orlando and was by a local writer.

Talk about a book that could actually be viewed as inappropriate.
