If an alien race stumbled across our little ant hill, they might be impressed with the resources of the earth, or maybe not.  But if they beamed down, to investigate, the first call to the mothership would probably be;

They would probably praise our adaptability, flair for invention, storytelling prowess, and near endless forms of entertainment, scratch their heads when it comes to culture and politics, and definitely not like our religious beliefs and tendency to harm one another.  Kinda hard to befriend a world that can't befriend itself.

Rare in the universe?  Definitely.  Rare among sentient species?  Probably not.  On Earth, cognition is definitely correlated with predation.   Sentient aliens would likely also follow that trend.
