QuoteA youth pastor was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography after police found thousands of images of female babies, toddlers, prepubescent girls and other children being raped on his home computer in Cockeysville, Md.

The investigation by Baltimore County Police found that Robert David Wright, 35, who led a youth group at Clynmalira United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Md., also allegedly shared the images with others online.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Pastor John Dailey of Clynmalira released a statement on Monday in which he confirmed that Wright is a member of his church and was a volunteer leader of the congregation's youth group, while adding that church officials are taking the allegations against him "very seriously."

"Providing a safe environment for the children and youth of the church is of vital importance to us," said Dailey.

Although Wright faces hefty charges if convicted, there is currently no evidence that he sexually abused the children in the images himself or that they are members of the church.

Dailey also said that Clynmalira implements the widely enforced United Methodist Churches' "Safe Sanctuary" policy meant to protect children within their ministries from abuse as well as protect vulnerable staff members.

"We are diligent in [the policy's] implementation and because of this, [we] feel confident that Robert Wright was never alone with any of the youth," said Dailey.

The church also enforces a "two-adult rule" in which a minor has to be accompanied by two adults in each classroom. In a situation where only one adult is able to be present, the policy requires that doors remain open.

Furthermore, part of the policy includes prohibiting staff from serving at any United Methodist Church in any capacity if they are convicted or have a history of sexual misconduct involving a minor or another adult.

Wright is currently being held on $150,000 bail and authorities will forward all images to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children while they attempt to identify all children involved.

Well, good for United Methodist. Might question the screening process for volunteers but otherwise, showing good sense in their methods of dealing with their youth. Too many youth pastors and volunteers don't get this type of oversight.

Props to the church for having some sensible measures in place to make sure no children in church were victimized by him. Other churches could learn from this. Good that he got caught too; hopefully he didn't do anything other than collect images.

The only thing this comment communicates is that you don't understand the relationship between God, people, and sin.  From the Christian perspective, human beings that have chosen to accept God's offer of mercy in Jesus Christ will not be free from their sin entirely until they have died.  Indeed the only people who should even become Christians are those that recognize their deeply sinful state and need of rescue.  However, because all human beings are sinful, the visible Church is made up of both genuine believers and unbelievers who claim the moniker of Christian.  There is no way for me to know which group this person belonged to, but becoming a Christian is no guarantee of sinless state in this life.

The point, actually, is that the establishment/religion has provided a way to screen and eliminate miscreants of a certain type from their midst. The concept of sin is a creation of religion. If you had spent some time here, you would know that "sin" is subjective. Describing sin as human nature is a religious viewpoint, not a secular one. We do not believe you are born into sin, any more than you are born religious. There have been religious societies where homosexuality, polygamy and even murder have been allowed.

The man's actions are immoral and illegal in the shared sense that creates of morality and law. We consider his actions as immoral and illegal and therefore indecent. Sin is your concept, as is the sinful nature of man, which we do not share.

Actually, I have spent quite a bit of time here, and I'm aware of many of these beliefs, but I was speaking from my own perspective as a Christian, not attempting to restate the beliefs of someone who is not me.  The fact that they were able to screen this out is certainly a good thing, but I was making a different point.  That point being, that merely being someone who claims to follow God or be a Christian does nothing to guarantee their moral behavior in anything like a perfect sense.  Sin is only subjective, if morality is subjective.  But I am a moral realist, and I think the morality is objective, and therefore, it's violation would be the same.  I didn't describe sin as human nature.  I described human nature as sinful.  There is a difference.  You may not believe that you are born into sin, and if you can claim perfectly moral behavior, then you are absolutely correct.  Yes, there have been religious societies that have accepted various degrees of sin for various reasons.  A lot of that relates to the biggest trouble with religion, which is false religion.
