Read a piece elsewhere- Reddit, I think- that some Brits said this news was overplayed by the media. The threats were against Islamic shopkeepers, not something carefully specified in the article. nonetheless, the mere threat of violence against anyone should supercede Sharia Law or any other religious mandate. The quack rabble rouser in my view is a candidate for a quick exit to a Middle Eastern location.

This news was not overplayed. Muslims attacked British people as well for drinking in the streets or for (women) not being covered up. they kidnapped and beat up a teacher for teaching muslim children in school about evolution.

Ever notice that all the super successful religions in the world are also super repressive?

Christianity and Islam boast numbers like no others and have historically imposed all sorts of sex restrictions, dietary laws (especially meat), drug restrictions (coming down pretty hard on alcohol especially), etc.  You name it, and it's either currently banned, been banned in the past, or is in the process of becoming banned.

And it's such a pervasive practice that it's pretty common for adherents to wonder if any given activity is permissible in their religion - everything from games of chance to tattoos to even innocuous stuff like Harry Potter or hot drinks or even handling a package containing alcohol or pork.  And they don't even seem to notice that it might be bad to think this way, to live your life by "Master, may I?"

Meanwhile, more permissive religions have orders of magnitude less adherents.

The group, led by former Al-Muhajiroun leader Anjem Choudary, warned restaurants and shops in the Brick Lane area that they face 40 lashes if they continue to sell the product, which is banned under Sharia Law.
