This is what the pharmaceutical industry fears the most: permanent solutions to certain diseases that will require fewer medication that this industry relies on to capitalize on profits. Yes, we do need the pharmaceutical industry to provide us with the required meds to make our lives better. But often too many, the industry is reluctant to find permanent solution, as this would cut into their profits. Gene therapy is one venue in which we can find the desirable permanent solutions we all seek.

Cool. That would work for me. I have an enlarged heart and all the problems this would solve.

entropy

That's great. I get a silly kick out of the idea that they are using viruses to deliver the genes needed to produce missing proteins.

Agramon

Very cool! I found the abstract here, though unfortunately it's behind a pay wall.

I also got curious about what type of virus they used, so here's some more information on that.
"And, tricked by our own early dream
And need of solace, we grew self-deceived,
Our making soon our maker did we deem,
And what we had imagined we believed."

Anytime you hear something really stupid money is involved some way. My wife and I were talking about this today, that genetic research could actually cure our most deadly diseases. Thanks for the post! Solitary
There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

The Skeletal Atheist

It could certianly cure HIV if used right. There's a certain gene that makes one to be immune to HIV. Could probably cure some major types of cancer as well.
Some people need to be beaten with a smart stick.

What? Big pharma wanting to actually CURE diseases? Unheard of! Why the JOB CREATORS might have to actually CREATE jobs for the people that are actually healthy.  Something sounds fishy.. Not TREATING diseases forever might kill jobs for big pharma!

If only they could manufacture some sort of drug that's not directly tied to treating an illness.  Alas...
