...that you didn't know were against religion.

I'm not a huge fan of Rush, although they are a terrific bunch of musicians. I'm not sure of their history, or if they have made any forward religious or other statements.

My boss is a huge Rush fan and let me borrow the album snakes and arrows, so i was reading the pamphlet with the lyrics and noticed the song the Way the Win Blows. The lyrics are very anti-modern judeo-Christian to me. Look it up and tell me what you think.

I'd say the lyrics of BU2B are pretty scathing indictment of the "design" and "all loving" argument.

And "Roll The Bones" is also skeptical of an "all loving" god.

But singer songwriter Shelley Segal has a pretty decent song in "Saved". She is up and coming and wish her all the success in the world. Look her up on FACEBOOK, and Youtube.

Mister Agenda

REM's song 'Losing My Religion' is kinda the opposite. It sounds like it's against religion, but it's not. It's just another way of saying you're losing your temper. That's their story anyways.
Atheists are not anti-Christian. They are anti-stupid.--WitchSabrina

I know Chris Cornell started his career in support of religion but I think in his later years he's started to question his faith.

Eddie vedder on the other hand hates organized religion, but considers himself spiritual.

Rush's song "Freewill" is an excellent one.

"The stars aren't aligned
Or the gods are malign
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide,
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill
I will choose the path that's clear
I will choose free will"

I'm pretty sure they're all three atheists.  I know their drummer (who writes their lyrics) is.  "Free Will" has already been quoted -- it's the song that helped me start sorting my reasons for my rejection of faith, as a teen.

The lyrics to "Faithless":

QuoteI've got my own moral compass to steer by
A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky
And all the preaching voices -
Empty vessels of dreams so loud
As they move among the crowd
Fools and thieves are well disguised
In the temple and market place

Like a stone in the river
Against the floods of spring
I will quietly resist

Like the willows in the wind
Or the cliffs along the ocean
I will quietly resist

I don't have faith in faith
I don't believe in belief
You can call me faithless
I still cling to hope
And I believe in love
And that's faith enough for me

I've got my own spirit level for balance
To tell if my choice is leaning up or down
And all the shouting voices
Try to throw me off my course
Some by sermon, some by force
Fools and thieves are dangerous
In the temple and market place

Like a forest bows to winter
Beneath the deep white silence
I will quietly resist

Like a flower in the desert
That only blooms at night
I will quietly resist

... or "BU2B":

QuoteI was brought up to believe
The universe has a plan
We are only human
It's not ours to understand

The universe has a plan
All is for the best
Some will be rewarded
And the devil will take the rest

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death

In a world of cut and thrust
I was always taught to trust
In a world where all must fail
Heaven's justice will prevail

The joy and pain that we receive
Each comes with its own cost
The price of what we're winning
Is the same as what we've lost

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to death

Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe

Until our final breath
The joy and pain that we receive
Must be what we deserve
I was brought up to believe

All is for the best
Believe in what we're told
Blind men in the market
Buying what we're sold

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to

Believe in what we're told
Until our final breath
While our loving Watchmaker
Loves us all to
Loves us all to death

Their stellar musicianship has been an inspiration, too, for over thirty years of my own music-making.

There's plenty...

Duran Duran - None of the Above

"I am by myself, alone...and realize
I never need to use no one
When it comes down to my soul
freedom puts my faith in none of the above"

XTC - Dear God

", hope you got the letter, and...
I pray you can make it better down here.
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image, see
Them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get
Enough to eat from God, I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but... I feel that I should be heard
Loud and clear. We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image, see them fighting
In the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God,
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue? Did you make
Mankind after we made you? And the devil too!

, don't know if you noticed, but... your name is on
A lot of quotes in this book, and us crazy humans wrote it, you
Should take a look, and all the people that you made in your
Image still believing that junk is true. Well I know it ain't, and
So do you, dear God, I can't believe in I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell. No saints, no sinners, no
Devil as well. No pearly gates, no thorny crown. You're always
Letting us humans down. The wars you bring, the babes you
Drown. Those lost at sea and never found, and it's the same the
Whole world 'round. The hurt I see helps to compound that
Father, Son and Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax,
And if you're up there you'd perceive that my heart's here upon
My sleeve. If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you...."

Midge Ure - Dear God (different song than above)

"Dear God, is there somebody out there?
Is there someone to hear my prayer?
I'm a simple man with simple words to say
Is there some point in asking?
Asking for more only got us where we are today
Lost and alone and afraid
Give me, love for the lonely
Give me, food for the hungry
Give me, peace in a restless world
Give me, hope for the children
Give me, a worldwide religion
Give me, peace in a restless world
Dear God, can you hear me crying?
A whole world crying
Looking for something to say
We had it all and we threw it all away
Is there somebody watching
Somebody watching over the mess that we've made"
And if there were a God, I think it very unlikely that He would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell

Simon Moon

ELP - The Only Way

"People are stirred, moved by the word.
Kneel at the shrine, deceived by the wine.
How was the earth conceived? Infinite space.
Is there such a place? You must believe in the human race.

Can you believe, God makes you breathe.
Why did he lose six million Jews.

Touched by the wings fears angel brings.
Sad winter storm, grey autumn dawn.
Who looks on life itself, who lights your way?
Only you can say. How can you just obey?

Don't need the word, now that you've heard.
Don't be afraid: man is man made.
And when the hour comes, don't turn away.
Face the light of day, and do it your way.
It's the only way."
And if there were a God, I think it very unlikely that He would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
