For years I belonged to another team, but after a rather long absence I was unable to log in again. Messages to the board went unanswered, so I started looking for another team and I found you! At last, after 71 years (I became and atheist at 10, so now you know how old I am). Little anecdote: when I emigrated to Canada, a long, long time ago, they refused me admittance until I changed the box "Religion" from "none" to "catholic". I am still ashamed of that. At any rate, I am looking forward to exchanging ideas with you all.

I'm in Alaska, by the way. One of my (many) pet peeves is the fact that several states have laws prohibiting atheists from holding office. It's unconstitutional of course and not literally enforced, but still...

Lo these many years ago, Canada, although a little uptight,  was not a bad country - which is why I wanted to go there. But it has been sliding down under the influence of rightwing propagandists in the US, to the point I decided I would rather go back to Europe. Did you know they now have a fundamentalist christian Prime Minister, who has appointed a few similarly affected cronies to his cabinet? Time to get out of there!

Ah, but 71 years ago, I was 10 and became an atheist, so you are a young'un! I remember it well, I was sent to spend time with catholic friends of my mother's and every evening, around six, the whole family (15 or 16 surviving children plus mom and dad) knelt in front of a red glass tealight and started mumbling "wees gegroet Maria" - this was in the Netherlands - and one day I just started to laugh (inside, of course, or I would have gone straight to hell).

It may not be official, but the look of horror when one states one's unbelief in god is something else. It is on the list of forbidden subjects at parties, along with sex, race and I do not know what else. I have noticed that humor, too,  has become a rare occurrence.
