Quote"The sexuality of pagan Rome was pretty similar to what we restored here.
The sexuality of the Roman Republic ("pagan Rome") was pretty much the same as the sexuality of most people in those days - teen-agers used Daddy's slaves for sex, fidelity wasn't a really solid idea yet, and people did what their priests told them the gods wanted them to do.  (Pretty much like today, in fact.)

QuoteSo, what we really have outside is a pagan sexuality which is totally different from a Christian sexuality. [...]
That would be the sexuality of the Christian Dark Ages?  Or the sexuality of the oh-so-Christian Borgia popes?

Quote"There's a pagan sexuality which is a pan-sexuality which is the erotic.
Pan-sexuality has nothing to do with Paganism.

QuoteAbortion, homosexuality, infidelity, pornography, euthanasia, infanticide
Aside from euthanasia, those all happened during the Christian Dark Ages and the Christian Renaissance.

Quoteall of those things were just the common sexual practice of pagan Rome
Actually most of them didn't come about until Imperial Rome, and were greatly influenced by Christianity.

Quoteand Christians were [noted] for being very different. Monogamous, faithful, struggling, etc...you know the chastity, purity."
Except for all those Dark Ages and Renaissance Christians.  Say, from 325 CE (before that, "Christian" meant "Jew" - let's not forget that) to about ... well, now.

QuoteWe're also like Rome in that we have lost the ability to govern and we put horses' asses in our Senate
I thought most of those horses' asses were Christians.

In fact, aren't 90% of the people he's talking about (in the US, at least) - aborters, cheaters, fornicators, etc. - Christians?  This is the guy who said
QuoteThe Supreme Court first put marriage on its track of decline forty-one years ago, when it ruled that states could not limit the sale of contraceptives to unmarried couples.
So he's against abortion, he's against the best means of preventing the need for abortion - and he's probably in favor of "abstinence only", a method known chiefly for its high failure rate.  Not exactly the sharpest spoon in the drawer.  (I won't insult knives by mentioning them in the same sentence I mention him.)

So he doesn't like the turn Christianity has taken in the 21st century.  Well, I agree - Christians like him should revert to 4th century sexuality.  And 4th century medicine, lifespans and technology.  (For more pure unadulterated Fagan-shit, see http://microsite.frc.org/get.cfm?i=RS12J01 The only parts that aren't total BS are the parts he forgot to include.)

Good analysis there, Colanth. human sexuality doesn't change over centuries and the only thing xtianity ever did with sexuality is to try to cover up what the leaders were doing in private.

I agree. Pretty succinct.  :)

Anyway... people enjoying sex?  What? Whatever next?  How can we make people feel guilt and come to church for atonement and fill up the collection plate if we just let them carry on like...erm... human beings?....

Gee whizz....  :-?

Romans enjoyed pagan sexuality when Rome was at the peak of its power.  The last major cultural change before the fall of Rome was the adoption of Christianity as the state religion.

I'm not saying there's a cause and effect relationship there, but just in case...

Yeah!  Take that secularists!  You and your child-molesting priests, affair-prone evangelicals, anti-gay bigots frequently found with male prostitutes, and fervently religious parents who let their children die of treatable illness in favor of an obviously ineffective prayer regiment.

And this my friends, is one of Christianity and Islam's GREATEST flaws, they basically demonize sex. Sex, that thing is natural and for the most part doesn't hurt anyone. Next they will say we should enjoy things from non-Christian cultures, ...oh wait...

And not only that, but encourage really harmful gameplans for sex ("natural" family planning, also known as the Oopsie Daisy I'm Preggers Again plan, celibacy until marriage lest the poor woman provoke an honor killing, and the ever-popular No Abortions Unless It Kills You And Not Even Then plan) and oppose safe sex (condoms, masturbation, even sexual fantasies).  It's like they use their authority to purposefully hurt their followers.  I mean God's followers.  Whoops.

Actually, infanticide was common all throughout the world until the late Victorian era, and in the ancient world, it was only ever taboo amongst the Jews and the Egyptians. Spartans killed weak babies by bathing them in cold water, and Roman fathers could legally dispose of any children that they didn't believe were theirs. Read the Wikipedia article on infanticide in the ancient world.

Except in Numbers, in which Jewish men were allowed to kill not only children they thought weren't theirs, but the wives pregnant with them.  (Well, strictly speaking it was the priest who killed them.)

Infanticide still goes on in many parts of the world. In China and India, girl babies are regularly aborted, killed after birth, or abandoned because the parents think boys are better. In some African cultures, a girl baby might be taken from the mother and killed. Millions of children, even in developed countries, are abandoned to the streets, neglected, abused, and forgotten--which, to me, is no better than simply killing them at birth. It has the same effect of getting them out of the way of adults who don't want them. Children have been treated like shit for centuries.
