Sir Roger Scruton does an excellent job debunking the misninformation that humans are animals.

In short, while human bodies possess biological similarities to those of certain animals, this does not mean that humans should be classified as animals, Since humans possess unique qualities which animals do not, such as being bound to other persons by obligations and rights.

We are not only human animals; we are also persons, in essential relation with other persons, and bound to them by obligations and rights. Our world is a shared world, exhibiting freedom, value, and accountability, and to understand it we must address other people face to face and I to I.

So I'm really not sure what ideology or religion insists on misclassifying humans as animals, but hopefully this classification can now be rendered debunked and obsolete.
