Everyone with half a brain took alarm.  But lots of people didn't notice or care or take it seriously, often because they trusted that Trump was a "good guy" who's on their side. Newsflash: if you're not a billionaire, you're either a rube or a target.  Either way, your interests are not his interests.

And he's far from the only one with a supplemental rap sheet:

President Trump has said he represents the party of "law and order." However, in issuing a blanket pardon for over 1,500 rioters, he has let people with pending charges such as child sexual assault, online solicitation of a minor, death by drunk driving and federal gun charges out of prison. And, in Daniel's case, he has made it potentially more difficult for the police to follow through with charges.

As part of his Jan 6th arrest, police found his child porn collection.  And also a pending statutory rape charge in Mint Hill, NC.  Doing my state proud.  :/

While I'm on the subject of the "lovely" intersection of sickos, right-wing flying-monkey criminal activity, and my home state - the Pizzagate gunman was shot and killed by police earlier this month.

Sadly, there's no shortage of people like him - people eager to believe absurdities and (nearly) commit atrocities.  Terrorizing some poor restaurant workers and customers all because some wackjob came up with some weird story and used him as a catspaw to do criminal activity that he was too scared to do personally.

One outfall from Jan 6 is that his cult followers were less likely to try something like that again. Given that they are getting out of jail, it's possible that they'll try again after the next election cycle, if that even happens. I'm hoping that the chump dies before we have to find out. He's already not a well man (physically or mentally).
