We trashed the world, so you must fix it

Something that's been brewing in my noggin when universal healthcare became a big issue and mass shootings became a "thoughts and prayers" thing:

It really is a serious problem that severe, systemic problems aren't addressed in terms of changing the whole system, but in terms of individual action, which at best might only slightly lessen the problem or the symptoms of the problem.

Think "coworkers pool sick days so that colleague with cancer can get treatment" or "kid fundraises to pay other kids' school lunch debt".  Ask yourself why these acts of kindness are necessary in the first place.

And then there's even more stuff:

"mass shootings happen here with startling regularity unheard of in most other countries so be sure to buy a bulletproof backpack or mandate that the teacher has a gun"

"Climate change puts your region at great risk of flooding.  Be sure to buy flooding insurance!" (if you can afford it)

The list is endless, but you get the idea.  Public failings, private solutions (if solutions are considered at all, and commonly, the "solution" is simply to pretend the problem doesn't exist)

Learn to spot this passing of responsibility/blame in the wild and point it out to others.

Thing about global warming is we recently had solid proof of it during lockdown when everyone stayed home and the planet got significantly better. They'll blame it on us not having electric cars, but it really doesn't matter if the gasoline is burned directly in our cars or at the power plant so we can charge up our cars. The real culprit is all those industries that were also shut down and couldn't dump greenhouse gases into the air.

We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."
