This makes a fun topic for an atheist to bring up when eating dinner with christian friends. Religions continuously evolve. For the Canaanites and the ancient Levantine region as a whole including the earliest Hebrews, ʼĒl or ʼIl was the supreme god, the father of mankind and all creatures. El being the father of all the gods means Yahweh was one of his children. Deuteronomy 32:8–9 explains how El Elyon ('Most high God') divided the nations among the seventy children of El, with Yahweh receiving his share.

When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel*. For the LORD'S [Yahweh's] portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

* The original text is preserved in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The passage said "according to the number of the children of El". That would simply not do, so they "fixed it".

Yep - only Jews have any real reason to worship Yəhōwā, the regional god of Israel and more specifically Jerusalem.

Fusing a father and son(s) into one being for political purposes is, unsurprisingly, very messy and only makes things less clear - case in point Charlemagne, many Pharaohs and many other historic heroes who had multiple generations of achievements attributed to them.

Then the people who worshiped El Elyon done and got themselves carted off to Media by the Assyrians, leaving only the ones who worshiped Yahweh to write about what happened and why.
