For those who might be interested, going to try to start posting famous Ukrainians and their accomplishments as I discover them - in a war of disinformation and cultural erasure, you never know.

Taras Shevchenko, 1814ish - 1861, was a Ukrainian serf-turned-poet/artist/ethnographer who is considered the father of mother Ukrainian poetry and language who studied in St. Petersburg Imperial Art Academy, introduced metal etching to Russia, and was heavily persecuted by the Russian crown in his time (and afterwards as well) for writing about an independent Ukraine with its own distinct culture and history as well as making fun of the Imperial family.

When he died in St. Petersburg at 47, his friend's smuggled his body out a few months later and had him re-buried just north of Kyiv, in a mound that turned out to also be the resting place of several Hetmat (essentially democratically-elected dictators of the Cossack people) of 16-17th century Ukraine.

While remembered for his poetry, his artistic talent was also nothing to sleep on.

The more things change, the more they stay the same - and the more we refuse to realize that learning history is the key to avoiding the same mistakes in the future.
