So, I've decided against getting a Colecovision Flashback.



It took a bit to reach this conclusion. But I have several reasons why I don't really want it.

First, I didn't have access to a Colecovision when I was a kid. I don't get a nostalgia hit off playing it. I'll admit this may be a big part of it.

Second, unlike the Intellivision, the Colecovision had a library built mostly out of arcade translations. While there may be some nice, original games what I mostly see are arcade translations. Or worse, ports of Atari 2600 games, like Pitfall! or Moonsweeper. These are kind of pointless while MAME exists and you can play the actual arcade game and not a lackluster port. And the ports are lackluster. The Donkey Kong port (not included in the Flashback) lacks the opening intro where DK climbs the building. They did make a version called Super DK for the ADAM computer that has the intro, but still lacks touches like death animation. The Coleco games just plain feel slapdash. Like they were relying on the "superior" graphics to make the system sell but they don't play very well. It's slippery and loose feeling with cheap deaths at every turn.

I'm sure there are some decent games for this system. I just don't know what they are. Nor do I know if they're included in the Flashback console.

On top of this, the Atari and Intellivision Flashbacks I have are kind of sitting and gathering dust right now. I am a sad bastard. But since I don't really like the Colecovision, it would definitely just sit even more.

I was going to post somewhere to get someone to convince me to get this thing anyway, but I decided against that, too. Fans are fans and they love the thing in spite of the flaws I've listed because of that all important nostalgia hit.

It's a bit disappointing, really. But it does show how systems can age poorly, especially when they take the easy route. It's why they have an Atari 2600 Flashback and not an Atari 5200 Flashback. Or 7800. Or Sega Master System.

It doesn't matter if you are a fan of it or not. It's simply not allowed in the forum. We have members on the site that don't want to see it,  and they were very clear about that a while back. In fact if memory serves correctly, you were a part of that discussion.

Nobody cares about 1080p, that's why I'm writing an article about it.

While I do think that the gaming community at times does put little too much emphasis on graphics (aesthetics and gameplay are more important, imho), it's pretty sad that "next-gen" content isn't keeping pace with dated PC graphics.  And worse, claiming that only a "vocal minority" would care about graphics.  These aren't just numbers, resolution and framerate does substantively affect the gaming experience.  For a dev to not care about this stuff is just baffling.
