Halo isn't realistic... unless you can jump 8 feet in the air (to be fair... steroids and super human armour), bullets fly straight and never drop at all (even if shot from 200 miles away) and you can shoot rocket launchers at your feet to get yourself more air time.
Sorry, meant Halo realistic.  D'oh!

Referring to this.  I mean, FFS...

So, recently, because I found that Kenny Loggins Skyrim mod, I've been playing Skyrim a lot more... but also this weekend I watched StreetFighter and Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 (I'm going to call it the trilogy of horrible) So, long story short, I've been playing Mortal Kombat on Super Nintendo like crazy

To any war hammer 40k fans; are the blood ravens a loyalist off shoot of the thousand sons, or are they simply a derivative of an existing legion, or are they tie own thing with an extremely clouded origin?

It's implied that they're derivative of a Chaos legion, but I don't think Games Workshop has fully revealed that yet.

Thanks, they were the first legion I ever played with, both table top and PC (dawn of war) I was curious.

Unlikely.  The Thousand Sons did not have any loyalist offshoots, afaik.  And further, their geneseed was notoriously unstable (putting it mildly), making them unsuitable to found any chapters. Though the Blood Ravens do have an awful lot of librarians and there have been a number of unsettling revelations and coincidences...

The Blood Ravens exact origin is unknown (to them), but based on the name and heraldry, they likely hail from either the Blood Angels or Raven Guard.  Up until now, I simply assumed that they were a successor chapter of the Blood Angels and their Unknown Primarch was unknown for a very, very good reason.  Either way, digging too deeply into their past is probably a bad idea.

They do have some very uncanny resemblances of the thousand sons, at least in a few respects. They revere knowledge and even use a similar mantra "knowledge is power".

The blood ravens having an unusual number of Payless could point to the thousand sons given that the sons have a large number of librarians before the Horus heresy. In addition; the dawn of war books both imply the legion being far older than 5k years and Ahriman himself implies that they could be related to the thousand sons.

However; this could also point to what hydra suggested, they could be a further mutation of the blood angel geneseed, which was already known to have mutated from its original seed. Which means that they're a loyal legion sprouted off of another loyal legion.

Finally; the world bearer leader in the dark crusade speaks eerily familiarly with the blood raven leader, and based on his words one could make a loose argument that the blood ravens could also be related to the word bearers.

(It's not often that I'm able to use my lore knowledge so I apologize if it's either tl;dr or out of date)

The G.S. Soto books (along with Spiritual Liege Matt Ward's leavings) are known to be extra heretical, though.  I wouldn't put too much stock in them.

This?

It's pretty common for Chaos Marines to be on overly-familiar terms with their loyalist adversaries.  Brother this, brother that, with the general refrain of "we were once as you".  It really gets under loyalists' skin.

GrinningYMIR

Valid points.

There were not many cases of loyalist marines surviving when the rest of their legions went to chaos, so it would give strong support to the side that says they are not related to the thousand sons.

The two legions could simply be parallels of one another, the knowledge seekers of both sides.

Furthermore; does having so many Payless make the legion more prone to corruption? The blood ravens have suffered heavy losses in the past decade and the recent corruption did leave half of the legion wiped out. One could argue that the more they study the closer they come to corruption, though it could also be said that this was due to negligence in watching over a man who came out of a warp Anton that had lasted for 500 years.

Personally I believe the blood ravens to have originated if not from the thousand sons, then from and offshoot of a legion of a similar doctrine.

I also believe them to be in dire straights in terms of manpower

Not necessarily.  Psykers are bright beacons that attract daemons, like a promising door on an otherwise insurmountable wall.  And boy, do they knock.  This makes a legion more vulnerable to daemonic influence but also more adept at fighting them.  And non-psykers certainly have their humanity tested as well.  Out of the Chaos Legions, some are heavily psychic, others not so much.  Same with the loyalists.  Imho, it's not necessarily better or worse.

I love the w40k universe. In my opinion, W40k: Space Marine is the best installment to represent the series as a whole. But if you're looking for another release, you will be disappointed. The project has been officially killed as a result of THQ's demise. And if anybody on here wants to be really cool by having me on their friends list, add: frostytheblowman on Steam. I'll post some recent titles I've played here later, and maybe we can get a thread going about the Steam Holiday Sale and which titles we should get.

A black day.  I was really looking forward to Dark Millenium and Dawn of War 3, too.  A new one, Eternal Crusade, is in the works from the world-famous folks at Behaviour Interactive with such excellent titles already under their belt as... :Hangman:

Dawn of War was another fantastic representation of the Warhammer 40K universe. Space marine was great, if short with no replay value. All other games for the franchise have been universally horrible including DoW2.

I kinda liked DoW2, but not as much as Dow1.  I liked the tyranids.  I liked the mission choices.  I liked the wargear.  I liked the levelup system and abilities.  It played more as a 3rd person RPG than a RTS, but meh, still fun.  The only thing that really irked me is that in the campaign, you could only play as Space Marines, and Blood Ravens at that.  :(   Retribution opened up the Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, and Chaos Marine campaigns, but they were all the exact same as the Space Marine one, which seemed lazy and made precious little sense, as NPCs react exactly the same to very different adversaries.  The final boss battle in Retribution was uninspired, to say the least.   :-&

I also hated DoW2's skirmish.  I can't even really put into words what was really all that different about it, but in DoW2, point capping/defending was just a constant headache and the tendency to be retreat-happy was deeply unsatisfying.  The Blood God demands blood, cowards.

What I wouldn't give to play a base-building version of DoW2 on the Dark Crusade campaign map.  As Tau, to boot.  *drools*

I was crushed when I first learned that DoW2 had given up base building. It turned me off to the game completely.
