QuoteSULLIVAN, Ind. - Some parents, students and clergy in an eastern Indiana city want a separate high school prom banning gay and lesbian students.

A group of supporters met Sunday at the Sullivan First Christian Church, in Sullivan County, to plan a separate "traditional prom" for Sullivan High School students that would prohibit gays from attending, WTWO reported .

"We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," a student told WTWO.

"If we can get a good prom, then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe," student Kynon Johnson told WTWO.

Among the supporters is Diana Medley, a special education teacher at nearby North Central Jr./Sr. High School in the Northeast School Corporation, who told WTWO she doesn't believe anyone is born gay.

"We don't agree with [homosexuality], and it's offensive to us," she said. "Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don't agree with them, but I care about them. It's the same thing with my special needs kids. I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason."

When asked if she thinks gays have a purpose in life, Medley said, "No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it."

"A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," Medley told WTWO.

Area pastors are also voicing support for the separate prom movement.

"Christians have always been prepared for a fight. Jesus gave us armor for the front, not the back. We're not running anymore," Bill Phegley, with Carlisle Church, told WTWO.

A Facebook page supporting the "traditional prom" had been pulled down Monday morning, and a counter campaign had been launched called Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students .

National gay rights advocate Dan Savage also blasted the separate prom movement on his blog .

"There's no way to stop the haters at Sullivan High School from holding an independent prom for the special bigoted kids," he wrote. "But here's what we can do: we can make a noise so loud enough that all the queer kids at Sullivan High School hear it. Those kids need to know that there are people -- a lot of people -- who think this (expletive) is wrong."

Messages seeking comment were left Monday for Southwest School Corporation Superintendent Chris Stitzle and for Northeast School Corporation Superintendent Mark Baker.

So just a few of my thoughts on this:
1. How the fuck can Christians continue to try to get away with this "I love you, but I think that you should be discriminated against" bullshit? I would've thought it would have become cliche by now.
2. I hope they have their little traditional prom. I hope it's fucking magical. I hope it's the best "traditional" prom one could even think of. I want those kids to have the best time of their lives. Then, 9 months later when all the girls give birth because condoms are evil (so is premarital sex, but damn these hormones!), I want them to think about what "traditional" values really mean.
3. There is no point number 3 - fuck these people in their overly tight assholes with a rusty pole.

Eh, churches around here used to do "prom alternatives" for Christians who felt convicted by the "sinful atmosphere" of public school prom. They all sucked ass and I'm sure this "prom alternative" will too.

20 years from now it'll be like talking to your grandparents about segregated bathrooms.

Fundies been pulling stuff like this for years, with mixed results.  Mostly, it just whips up a shitstorm and organizers usually bail or become targets of public scorn for forever.  But these people sure seem to love playing the role of pious martyrs, so it could go either way.  Expect the "traditional" prom to be very light on attendees, if they even do it at all.

Wait a moment here! I will change one word here ...

"We want to make the public see that we love the TERRORISTS, but we don't think it's right nor should it be accepted," a student told WTWO.

It doesn't make sense to love the TERRORISTS and they shouldn't be accepted.
Why would it make sense to believe that those hypocrite Christians could love the HOMOSEXUALS while they shouldn't accept them?

Basically! Stop saying that you love the homosexuals if you can't accept them.

I agree, though I think the terrorism analogy is flawed.
1. They DO love terrorists, and they love them the exact same way they love homos.
2. This legitimizes the argument that homosexuality is harmful, even if unintentionally.

They have an internal disconnect between what they call love, and what love actually is.  They CLAIM they follow the bible, but ignore 1 Cor 13 when it requires them to treat "unsavory" people as humans.  They love gays, until it is time to treat gays as people and extend them the same rights that they give everyone else.  Their love for people who are different is the kind of internal love that really means fuck all in the real world.

I thought the days of "Separate but equal" was over, but it never ceases to astound me how much history repeats itself despite progress.

The thing that really astounds me is how many black people are against gay rights, particularly older ones that still remember the civil rights movement of the 60's. You'd think they wouldn't want to be on the other side of such a similar issue that they/their ancestors went through.

Well you go far enough into the future you can see even atheists looking at a new minority and doing the same thing, so it still amounts to the evolutionary fear of change. Humans see a pattern and when it works long enough they don't like any change even if that change is good.

I think the cure is to always remind ALL HUMANS that we are NOT a separate species and what bad might have been done to us in the past we ourselves if we forget, can potentially do to some other group in the future.

I don't honestly think this is the case.  Black people, especially ones old enough to remember the civil rights battles, are almost always EXTREMELY religious.  There is no biblical basis for racism, nowhere does the bible say "black folks aint people".  The bible DOES say "kill homos".  There was never a way to claim that one can choose not to be black, but there is an easy way to claim homosexuality is a choice, even if it's biologically erronous to do so.  It's ironic, but it's not terribly far-fetched that it's not a selfish idea on their part.
