Further proof (to me) that they are trying to get people back in the pews. The fact that the church is shuttering churches worldwide, that Ireland- thought of as the most "Catholic" of any country- voted for gay marriage with a large majority- and all the stink from child molestation charges.

This pope was appointed for damage control and this, in my opinion, is just another example of it.

I'm not normally one for conspiracy theories, but I believe it's possible that the resignation of Pope Satan and the installation of Pope Goody Two Shoes was part of a carefully thought out plan by the Catholic church to repair the damage done by literal centuries of abuse of power which only just caught up to them.  I would not be surprised if the new pope was chosen before Ratzinger even resigned.  They were still reeling from the worst scandal pretty much in history, Ratzinger was so involved President Bush had to give him immunity from prosecution before he would even step foot on American soil, he looked vile, he talked nonsense (especially with his condom science denial) and he was just a plain dick.  Catholics were leaving in droves.  They needed to do something right then.  And fortunately Ratzinger just happened to pick that time to resign and they just happened to have the perfect guy in line who never said a controversial thing in his life.  I would bet he was vetted thoroughly before being proposed as a candidate to make sure he wasn't in any way linked to anything controversial.  Of course, that's a conspiracy theory, which I, myself, hate, but it was all just a little too perfect for me to think it was probably just coincidence.

And, now that I re-read what you wrote, you're pretty much saying the same thing with about 90% less tinfoil hat than me.
