It has always amazed me how people react emotionally to symbolism, like it is the real thing it represents. This is the same with words. I'm convinced that mankind became crazy when language was invented. Understand lul? 

Language is a two edged sword.  While it's an evolutionary advantage, it's also the source of a lot of logical fallacies.  Perhaps all logical fallacies.  Take the Fallacy of Equivocation, for example.  That fallacy could not exist without language.  So while language paves the way to greater knowledge, it also aids in muddled thinking.  Useful tools, can often be dangerous.

Pubes are always quick to "gnash teeth and tear off clothes" at any sign that one disrespects the flag by not following to the letter the flag code, while meanwhile wave, cheer and celebrate George Sr. wearing it is a jacket inner liner and Jr wearing it as a f-ing trophy.

I will admit that am sentimental about a few private, personal objects. Those things are private, but they have symbolic meaning for me.

When it comes to desecrating symbols, some I think seem to be more universal than others. Flags can really get some people riled up, but a lot of people wouldn't generally care. Yet virtually across all cultures, human remains are treated with a certain amount of respect. There's a lot of symbolism in pissing on a grave or carving up a dead body.

Solitary ... In most societies thru most of history, it was illegal to dissect a human body.  This held up medicine for centuries.  It is possible that the development of language ... which according to evidence was perhaps very primitive 40,000 years ago in biologically modern humans, led to the breakdown of the bicameral mind.

This was trending on my facebook and people seem to be making a big deal about it.... To be honest, I don't see why or really care. It is a church after all and the church's flagpole. They can fly whatever flags in whatever order they want.

But other than that, I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. I'm anti religion, but I'm also anti nationalism so it seems like this is being made in to a whole lot of nonsensical drama.

If people got pissed off about this just imagine what would happen if a mosque flew an Islamic flag over an American flag!

I dunno. maybe if it was in reverse and the american flag was flew above the islamic flag, or replacing the islamic flag with the dildo flag.

People have hot buttons ... and it is both curious and dangerous to push them.  Like bombs, they are primed to explode.  Muslims for example, have an even more exaggerated view of the nature of the Quran, than even Christians or Jews do of the Bible.  Desecration isn't just what they feel, but you are literally messing with a "heavenly" object ... a Platonic form ... of which the physical Qurans are a material representative.  I suppose if you desecrated a crucifix ... then for some, you are literally stepping on Jesus, not a symbol of Jesus ... there is transubstantiation going on for them.  Some may feel this about the national flag (and for the South, the Confederacy was, is and will always be their country) ... that you aren't dissing an idea, you are vandalizing the substance of who they are.  The sense of self inspires self-defense, and that sense of self can extend beyond the physical body, to your buddy in the fox hole, or your whole tribe.
