Just watched this again  on PBS. First aired in 2008. Gives a very good and evidence laden explanation of how Judaism turned from a polytheistic to a monotheistic religion and where the legend of Exodus came from and how the bible came to be written. 2 hours, but if you want to become an expert on the subject, this is a very good start.

The early followers of the Judaic religion believed that Yahweh was just one of many gods, such as Baal, Astherah, etc - later on they changed things up and made him the supreme god of the cosmos.

Nice to see that getting on TV but this is something historians have known for a long time. I was arguing Hebrews merely being a splinter sect of Ugartic polytheism for years now.

Hebrew is a splinter sect of polytheism, and merely monotheism 1.0 Christianity is monotheism 2.0 remember Jesus was a Jew, funny how that works. Islam is monotheism 3.0 and me, I say it is all really fairy tale NO.0

Solitary

What difference does it make if there are many gods, or one God, when they are a figments of imaginary human beings like all fairy tails with not a shred of reliable evidence accept ancient history that is mostly a fabrication?  :wtff: There isn't two truths, only one, that which is real and not imaginary that goes away when humans do.  :wall: :wall: :wall: Are we caving into terrorism like others are doing now. I don't want peace, I want freedom! Solitary
There is nothing more frightful than ignorance in action.

I mentioned this a couple of years ago on here and mentioned it again for the same reason- direct your christian friends to the website and the video and let them learn where their religion came from. This is very good because it is methodical, looks at the facts, shows where the Bible was correct and where it is wrong. And it also explains how Judaism/ Abrahamic religions developed from polytheism. This is something every member of these religions should see and understand. there would be many more atheists around if they watched.

And it also explains how the Bible Old Testament got written. It shows who compiled it and where the texts originated and how/when it got written. And it explains the origins of the Exodus myth- which turns out to be the oldest writings in the Bible. Highly recommend this video.
