I loved the original series when i was younger but looking at it now well, its so old.... the next generation was excellent and also voyager ,
The Next Generation has somewhat better interior sets, but they often use the same fake rocks and sand with just a blank backdrop illuminated with flood lights when they are on a deserted planet.  The acting is better, but doesn't match today's standards.  I'm only on season one right now.  It very well might get better as the series progresses.

The original series was wonderful for it's time, and started a phenomena, but it's second rate today.  I think the stories were better than today's, but many relate to 50 year old social issues, making it seem somewhat outdated.

Yeah, the storytelling is pretty lackluster with only occasional excellence.

But Star Trek did present a setting where race is no longer an issue, secularism is the norm, science is highly esteemed, internationalism trumps nationalism, and peace is more prevalent than war.  And considering what was going on in the 60s, that's big.

I'll give kudos to them for what you said. I also think that they did put science in the minds of young people, which is important. their message was moral without being ideological.
