This sounds surreal. How do you make a pager explode?  NYT is reporting it. Apparently, it's for real. But I'm a bit skeptical.

The pager can be made to send a signal to a bomb, perhaps equipted with another pager that will ring your bell.

Yeah, looks like it's for real.  My question is how did this get pulled off? Instantly over-heat the battery? Something else?  Strange goings-on.

Early reports talk about getting hot and then "exploding". I've seen claims that 15 to 20 grams of an explosive such as C4 could cause the damage seen. Not sure how that much explosive could be crammed into a pager casing, tbh- there isn't a lot of room inside any pager I've ever had. It's still all speculation, for now. I still have to admire the skill of this exploit, though.

They were purchased from an Asian dealer, but the delivery was intercepted by Israel, explosives were implanted with a trigger that could be activated by a phone call. But Israel has not claimed to have anything to do with it (last I read).

Pretty damn clever. I had a similar thought at the beginning of the war(s)against the Taliban to"allow" several loads of ammo to be stolen after being modified to simply blow up upon firing.
