Mike CL - yeah, Stranger In A Strange Land ... now that was a book.  We had a short story in social studies in HS, where aliens were trying to understand humans.  They hypothesizes that cigarettes were how pedestrians propelled themselves down the sidewalk ;-)

Are you taking any medications?
Don't do that.

Yeah, it is still one of my favorite books.

Did you ever read the Moon is a Harsh Mistress? I think I mentioned it in another topic about artificial intelligence, but that's easily my favorite Heinlein book.
How can you be sure my refusal to agree with your claim a symptom of my ignorance and not yours?

Yes, I've read it a couple of times.  I like it.  But picking my fav RH novel is easy.  Stranger In A Strange Land--the best.  But my second fav--can't pick one.  I also liked Glory Road, Farnham's Freehold, A Door Into Summer, Orphans of the Sky, Methuselah's Children, and Time Enough For Love.  Of course he wrote many more.

I did a book report on Stranger back in 1966. The next year it was the required reading for that class. Teacher got fired for assigning it. Small town Indiana couldn't hang.
We 'new atheists' have a reputation for being militant, but make no mistake  we didn't start this war. If you want to place blame put it on the the religious zealots who have been poisoning the minds of the  young for a long long time."

She was one of them there feminists. Don't need their kind in our town no how. (She got a job in Indianapolis, a positive Mecca of liberal thought compared to Alexandria. (Elvis came there once or twice to make gospel records with the Bill Gaither Trio, two of whom I had classes with.))

In that time frame I was in a HS in a small CA, settlement (not a town really, but a village by a US Army ammo dump) that was mainly conservative.  So, the most controversial book we would be officially exposed to was Mark Twain.  And not all of his works, just Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer.

Stranger In A Strange Land, A Door Into Summer, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, and To Sail Beyond The Sunset were all a joy to read, and that's my Heinlein read list so far. My personal favorite was Door Into Summer, not because I agree so much with his economic philosophy which so pervaded all of his works, but he kept that story moving without over-extensive soliloquizing.
There are two types of ideas: fact and non-fact. Ideas which are not falsifiable are non-fact, therefore please don't insist your fantasies of supernatural beings are in any way factual.

Doctrine = not to be questioned = not to be proven = not fact. When you declare your doctrine fact, you lie.

I also enjoyed that Heinlein was a cat lover and that he loved to play with the problems of time travel--which was apparent especially in books like A Door Into Summer.  That was the first full length novel I read to my daughter.

Have you heard that "All You Zombies" has been made into a movie? An Australian production called "Predestination". It's worth a look. (Out of DVD in the US now.)
