At least 12 people were arrested in Ferguson on Monday night amid pitched battles between protesters and police.
A cat and mouse game developed over the course of the night as police in riot gear staged sporadic raids on the group of 1,500 people on West Florissant Avenue in the suburb of St Louis in Missouri.
Officers rushed groups of protesters and pepper sprayed them before snatching suspects and handcuffing them.
Protesters threw bottles of water and screamed: 'F*** the police' as tensions threatened to boil over for a second night.
Late Monday afternoon, protesters shut down a highway outside of Ferguson in both directions during rush-hour traffic as part of the anniversary weekend of the shooting of Michael Brown. Police arrested more than 50 demonstrators who blocked traffic.
The protest had escalated around 8pm when a group of blocked the street with some barricades and stood on a building waving signs.
Police ordered them to clear the street and a standoff ensued with 150 cops on one side of West Florissant Avenue and protesters on the others.
In one of the arrests dozens of armed cops with helmets and riot shields crossed the street and arrested the occupants of a car, including two girls who were sprayed with pepper spray. Another man was wrestled to the floor by five officers.
Each arrest led to heightened tension which calmed down until the next flare up. The St Louis County Police Department said that officers had been pelted with rocks and bottles.
The police department confirmed that at least nine people were arrested and charged with resisting and interfering with arrest.

On Monday dozens of people including activist and philosopher Cornel West were arrested as they protested outside the Federal Courthouse in St Louis.
But the main fear of further protest was because of a friend of Michael Brown being in a 'critical, unstable condition' after being shot by police when he used a stolen handgun to fire on officers during a protest to mark the one-year anniversary of the 18-year-old's controversial death.
The unrest started to unfold late last night, police said.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said that plainclothes officers were tracking the man at around 11:15pm, while several hundred people gathered on West Florissant Street to take part in the demonstration.
He added that the man approached the officers, who were in an unmarked police car and opened fire. The officers returned fire from inside the vehicle. They then pursued the man on foot. The chief said the man again fired on the officers and all four fired back.

It looks exactly the same with the protests broke out after police killing a few Alewit protesters (different cases) in 2013 events in Turkey. (At least the Alewit youth were on a protest against the government policies in country wide protests though.)

And police is not even openly condemned as far as I understand.

Why isn't there any open support for this from other states? Or may be not in the news?

Any opinions on it, besides the obvious?

One of the events that sparked off this round of looting was a gunfight between rival gangs that caught up plain clothed officers keeping an eye on the demonstrators.

In this country race and policing are sold to the public in a very devious way.  On one hand is the power of the state, one you understand well Shoe, the other here is the power of the people, but it's become very toxic from both sides. In the case of Mr Brown it's unclear who was at fault because we don't seem to get any unbiased reporting.  One faction would have you believe that Brown was a thug, plain and simple and deserved to die and another faction paints him as an innocent boy slaughtered in the streets by a rogue cop backed by an oppressive,  racist system.  Protesters are painted as hooligans out to destroy a city while police are portrayed as just on a killing spree or just doing their job. . The entire fiasco at some level becomes one big selling job and nobody seems to believe anything.

Admit it. You're secretly green with envy.

But Brown was unarmed, wasn't he? How many of those black people who were shot dead was unarmed or just doing nothing dangerous.

Judging that a person is 'thug' or not is the core of the problem. It's NOT police's job to look at someone and make an official judgement AND get into an action right there to punish the person.

Do you remember the case of Amadou Diallo? A 22 year old kid from Guinea shot dead by 4 NYC police officers? They fired 41 shots...which around 20 hit him. He was unarmed.

There are interpretations of behavioural patterns, habits recorded by cops. How they percieve the cshae and the person they are 'against' in that situation.  And how they react and why. The most famous research is about the cops doing a car chase with a partner and why in the end the person chased always ende up dead. You know why? Because they are two in a car. Partners. Being a team. Just because of those researches, in some states the system has been changed.

There is also a detailed interpretation of Diallo's case from the view point of collective memory of those cops, how they were so highly likely to interpret Diallo's actions; they were almost programmed to shoot dead a nonwhite kid. It's very interesting and something most people would deny violently with a lot of excuses. Mainly whites.

Malcolm Gladwell's famous book BLINK is a good source for these kinds of research and interpretations. It also shows how pathetically influencial species we are.

In short cut, we are ALL racists against nonwhites, including nonwhites. And these killings are RACIST, they are happening because it is consciously and subconsciously TAUGHT to people from early years that nonwhite people are more prone to violence that any groups are more likely to get killed by nonwhites in the USA. This is bullshit. It's neither correct, nor true.

FBI statistics shows that white on white violence is HIGHER than black violence. Further more, violent crimes commited against females by male perpetrators in white group is higher than nonwhites.

This is very good:

Quote“It seems that the media in general and white American society in particular prefer to focus on crime perpetrated by African Americans because it serves as a way to absolve them from the violence, prejudice and institutionalized discrimination engendered for generations against blacks. It offers a buffer against responsibility, a way to shift blame and deflect cause and effect. But the truth, and numbers, tell a different story. At the heart of an increasingly violent society is not a subculture among Blacks, but the violence and criminality of many Americans, and whites in particular. No one seems to speak about this. Why? Because the snake oil was duly purchased and consumed. It is time for race-based pseudo-facts to be challenged and dismantled.”
