The Song hit theaters today without so much as a coming attraction, not even the usual weekly advance notice at my local theater.  I watched the trailer, and there was no indication that it would be another Christian propaganda movie.  It appeared to be about a country western singer, who suddenly makes it big, and gets into the whole drugs and sex musician scene.

It didn't even have a review at Rotten Tomatoes, but I managed to google up something from the New York Times:

A Musician Pastures His Flock Among the Lilies

‘The Song’ Follows a Wayward Singer to Redemption

Christian-themed movies often try to sneak in the religion, with characters suddenly plunging into message-laden monologues. It’s rarely a successful tactic. “The Song,” a well-acted drama with some good music, takes a different approach. It makes its intentions clear early on and reiterates them throughout, having the lead character recite pieces of the biblical Song of Solomon in voice-over.

That may sound heavy-handed, but it works surprisingly well. Ultimately, though, the tale isn’t as innovative as its presentation.

Jed King (Alan Powell of the Christian band Anthem Lights) is a struggling country singer who hits it big when a song he writes for his wife (Ali Faulkner) catches on. His popularity results in long tours, and, of course, there are temptations on the road, including one named Shelby (Caitlin Nicol-Thomas), a musician in the band that opens for him.

The actors, none of whom have much experience, are quite convincing, but the story â€" Jed falls, then sees the error of his ways â€" is an oft-told one. Jed ends up as just another star who chooses the straight and narrow only after having indulged in pleasures and debaucheries of all sorts. “Do as I say, not as I do” is the most wearying song of all. “The Song” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned) for drug use and implied hanky-panky.

And it will be another missed opportunity for a parodic movie to ridicule it.
