This is probably a silly question, but what's called the Secular Christmas is also celebrated on Dec 25th?

Are you talking about Festivus? Are you getting the aluminum pole out and participating in the feats of strength this year too?

Yes I suppose that's it. Haha, no I'll probably get a fake tree, no real ones in Japan, or at least not on the mainland. To me this was always a commercial holiday and Jebus was never part of it.

The Airing of Grievances doesn't just have to happen during The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, either. Sometimes being an atheist has its distinct advantages.
A cynical habit of thought and speech, a readiness to criticise work which the critic himself never tries to perform, an intellectual aloofness which will not accept contact with life’s realities â€" all these are marks, not as the possessor would fain to think, of superiority but of weakness. -TR

Wait, just because some objects are long and tall doesn't make them all phallic.  Trees grow that way.  :-s

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "The use of evergreen trees, wreaths, and garlands to symbolize eternal life was a custom of the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, and Hebrews. Tree worship was common among the pagan Europeans and survived their conversion to Christianity in the Scandinavian customs of decorating the house and barn with evergreens at the New Year to scare away the devil and of setting up a tree for the birds during Christmastime."

Nothing to do with fertility or penis's.  Just lovely green life in the middle of freezing winter, and some superstitious stuff about scaring away evil spirits.

Quote from: "drunkenshoe"I never thought fertility of the penis or pagan roots of the custom posting that tree. I was just thinking the understanding of patriarchal god of all monotheist religions. The first is not mine, it is the pic posted in the Festivus entry of wiki. And it's already making fun of the same thing besides the usual if you cannot make the connection.

Evergreen trees have more complicated net of meanings as trees or symbols of other various things than Encyclopedia Britannica is designed to inform.
And I was just pointing out that Christmas tress have nothing to do with the monotheistic religions.  Therefore your joke made no sense.

Now the Festivus thing I get.  It is a modern invention created AS a joke, and their spoof on current religious traditions.

I always liked that episode, but I'm surprised that Festivus has earned a page on Wikipedia.  I wonder if anyone actually celebrates some version of it.  Maybe someday it will become a national holiday with a day off work.  Is the way some religious movements have started?  Hmmm!  So many questions to ponder.

I laugh every time I see "Jesus is the reason for the season" shit. It is so stupid. If you removed everything not symbolic of Christianity from the picture, you are basically left with a manger and some sheep and shepherds. Everything else, the tree, wreath, ornaments, gifts, everything is from pagan origins. Horseshit.
