Humanity has done a rather nifty job of creating a reason for living even without knowing it. Gods aside, we created the idea of legacy and inheritance. Once we started to think that our sons were an extension of ourselves we started to strive for greater goals and for our sons to exceed those. Women, culturally tend to want male children because the culture grants the male a greater opportunity to become the leader or chief. This grants the mother, father and extended family certain benefits.

The idea that life has a purpose goes back a long way, perhaps we adopted it as a more reasonable conclusion than gods in our youth. Perhaps we were actually a little smarter back then.
