I still prefer its original name - the goddamned particle.
Afflicting the comfortable for 70 years.
Science builds skyscrapers, faith flies planes into them.

Right. So when a fundie spouts uneducated bullshit about the god particle, you can just tell them that the full name is goddamned particle.

Colanth

Or use it in the original context: "I wish you'd shut up about the goddamned particle."

Quote from: "BarkAtTheMoon"The funny thing about it being called the "God Particle" is that it's existance is just one more thing that makes creator gods unnecessary.

I also think the term is a crap, but there is a bright side:

Whenever a "fundie" proudly mentions the "god particle" I explain why and they do silly face, priceless!!

This is why I love science. You can predict something so potentially groundbreaking yet with no way to confirm it beyond mathematics and logic, then 50 years later your prediction comes to fruition. Let's see a theologian do that!

More importantly though: when can we begin defying gravity with it?

Two thousand years later and they're still watching the skies for a dead Jewish carpenter.

The Man Who Coined 'The God Particle' Explains: It Was A Joke!

I heard this on NPR today. The guys who wrote the book "The God Particle" are both atheists - they suggested the name to the publisher as a joke. The publisher liked it.

I suggest we simply take this as another opportunity to laugh at those who don't understand the first thing about science, yet wish to claim that science proves god.

St Giordano Bruno

Why don't they just stick to the "Higgs boson" without giving theists more ammunition?

I'm terribly sorry, but i couldn't link, and I've misplaced my bible since the move 5 months ago. Here is why some Christians think this is a huge problem for atheists!
Q for theists; how can there be freewill and miracles? And, how can prayer exist in an environment as regimented as "gods plan"?

By "this", I mean the Higgs boson particle.

Here it is:

Quote19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[a] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

I don't see how this would be a problem to atheists because the Higgs Boson is

A) not plain to anyone, it took as almost 2000 years of science to come up with it and another 50 years and one of the biggest machines ever built to prove it existed
B) not clearly perceived, because see above
C) not shown to us by god, because see above

It's just yet another case of people trying desperately to use the bible to say that they knew all along, which of course they didn't.
