This is a link to the letter vets are repoetedly receiving deeming them incompetant of handling their funds.  I know we have many vets here with us.  Any of you receive something like this?

SvZurich

Nope.  The bad thing about this is that it can be used to deny the veteran the right to own a firearm.

The really bad thing is it's done without due process. So they are violating 2 of your rights right there.

SvZurich

That's something we've come to expect.  When I was enlisted, it was constantly made clear that I had no rights.  Well, a very limited subset of rights that would burn my ass if I tried to use them did exist.

That's a form letter.  What is the VA form number, and why is that not displayed in the picture?

I'm not sure what you are talking about.  As per my knowledge of headers for this stuff the blocked out area should be the office neumber of where it came from.  Are the VA letters set up differently?

I have a few problems with this. First is how they determine exactly what misuse of funds is, second who has the authority to make that decision in a legal way, not to mention due process. It would appear that judgment is made outside of and without any input from the veteran himself. I don't understand how they can legally make that kind of determination.

From what I can gather from the letter, the hospital in Oregon that he (or she) went to believes he has a condition, probably mental, that they believe is causing him difficulty in managing his finances, which is either disability, or retirement payments from the VA. I would guess it to be the former, rather than the latter, due to the implication of mental disability. Just my opinion. This is pretty common for drug and alcohol addiction. Even social security can mandate a payee if someone is having mental health issues.

VA forms typically have a number on them, in a statement like this:  VA Form 6969 Oct 2011 Supercedes  Sep 07 Edition, usually at the bottom, in small print.  Where is it?

Looking over that website, they seem slanted to conservatism.  Do you have another source reporting this?

There are a few, that one just had the letter.  It looks more like correspondence to me than a form though.  Under the white block at the very top there is usually identifying information that they covered up probably for protection.  I have been trying to find a good source that would likely be accepted by everyone for the full story but have not seen any main stream news sources that have this yet. This is why I asked if any of the veterans here have experienced this.  I have no dealing with the VA at this time so I don't know how they work.

I'd like to see more reportage of this, and from a better source.  It doesn't ring true with my experiences in the system, nor does your link provide anything other than a picture of a letter that could well have been assembled on his home computer.

It certainly isn't solid enough for me to get up in arms and Internet mad.

Ya, the more I look into this it seems to be an isolated case.  Probably some guy that has major issues and got pissed off because the VA sent him this letter.

The Skeletal Atheist

I'm not so sure what's wrong with this, other than the fact that the use of the word "incompetent" could be seen as demeaning. Other than that, if someone receiving government benefits isn't able to handle their money because of some sort of disability they should have someone else handle it for them. The letter even includes ways to respond if he/she disagrees with the VA's assessment. I've heard some valid complaints with the VA, but this doesn't seem like one to me.

I haven't had any problems with the VA, and I've been dealing with them since I retired 10 years ago.  I have a friend who's worse off than I am who goes regularly to the VA, and I'm pretty sure he hasn't received anything like this.

If this letter is on the up and up, I suspect the person who received it has some serious issues.  In any event I would get some independent legal council if I got this letter.

AllPurposeAtheist

I live in a vet homeless shelter/drug alcohol rehab and so far nobody I've showed it to has even heard of such a thing and we have some wacko's in here..
All hail my new signature!

Admit it. You're secretly green with envy.
