Geography is hard Unfortunately, due to several factors, American geography skills are subpar.  This is likely due to a poor emphasis on geography in primary school, not great schooling in general, a lack of emphasis on geography in news blurbs as an adult, and ironically because of America's geography - we have only two land neighbors which we are quite familiar with, but that familiarity gets pretty hazy pretty quickly and it takes real effort to build up a familiarity with say, eastern european geography which a lot of Americans simply don't have the time and/or inclination to learn and maintain.

Also, I wouldn't be able to correctly multiply 7 times 8 correctly in front of a camera.

And finally, the unfamiliar orientation of the map (normally, the US is on the far left side, and Russia is on the far right) and lack of color (making it difficult to differentiate countries) is likely contributing to confusion.

This is very common nowadays. I get that we have specialized, but still, that bums me out. These people are so easy to fool.

Yeah, I bet everyone on this forum could name at least several, if not more. 🤔

I remember in the mid-80's I read a report from the Military Intel unit (active reserve) I was a member of that 10% of the West Point cadets failed to accurately label the Soviet Union on a blank map.  I found that a little disturbing then and I still do.

I would certainly get Russia, China, and Australia.  Hard to miss those.

I could get at least a dozen off the top of my head - countries in North America, Western Europe, or East Asia are particularly easy.

Though I admit, I'd have a hard time with Latin America, Africa, or Indochina.  And the Caribbean islands and Oceanic islands would basically be impossible for me without access to the internet.

I used to know this stuff much better - I was a big fan of Carmen Sandiego and my school had us memorize country names and fill them in on blank maps.  It quite stressful.

Disturbing indeed.  I wonder how many of the 90 per cent who were able to locate it were guessing.

I slept in 72 countries while I was in the Navy and some periods after that. Lost all my journals. Still pissed about that.

What exactly is a "crafty" wank? Is that something you could buy at a model shop? 🤔
