Hey now, just about every decent story out there is about good characters going through serious struggles.  The alternative is Mary Sue stories (overpowered, flawless characters who effortlessly solve whatever problems arise) and people hate those.

On the other side of the sliding scale of cynicism, if all the good characters died or failed, then that'd be a big downer and an utterly pointless story.  Instead, some of the good characters survive and go through a lot crap for *fingers crossed* a big payoff at the end.  Maybe.

P.S. - we also get the occasional Purple Wedding, so the bad guys do get what they deserve eventually.

Purple Wedding? Is that when the old guy eats a pie with...his family?

Born under one law, to another bound;
Vainly begot, and yet forbidden vanity,
Created sick, commanded to be sound."

I am a strange cat, I guess. I vaguely follow the storylines, but I am in it for the environment, the vibe, and the occasional moments of great messaging. LOTR has all that as does HP. GOT was a bit too much like The Real Housewives, but it had enough of what I like....so that I hung in there.

The line I like most from LOTR is sometimes incorrectly attributed to Tolkien. It is a line from the Hobbit movie that did not appear in the books.

"Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.

This so much more profound than anything in the babble.

Yes, you are strange (in a very good way) and I can easily picture you as a cat (I love cats).  Those are two very good traits to have and is one of the reasons I love your presence on this board.  Keep up with the strangeness. !!! :))

Thankyou Mike! This is a rare little collection of wonderful people we have here. People who are brave enough to think things out.

This is super off-topic, but I thought HP didn't handle magic in a very consistent way.  One moment, it's polymorph and stupify, the next it's time travel (a godlike power when used creatively, just ask Dr Who) and death curses.

Magic is a dangerous thing to add to a story because it can serve too much as a deus ex machina.  So when an author builds a story where magic is central, I expect it to have certain rules and limitations.  In the HP universe, just about anything goes at any time, which I guess is its main draw, but I found it very confusing and never knew if the protagonists were in over their heads or not.

My take was that magic in HP is so quirky that it follows rules that wouldn't make sense to muggles or the reader. Also there is the Ministry of Magic that polices misuse. The tone of the story made it very easy for me to just roll with it. With other series though I can totally go all Annie Wilkes.

Sama, I put you in the 'strange' category, as well--also in a good way.  As I came to realize just how strange I am I had a period when that distressed me.  Then I came to realize that I liked my strangeness.  It's kind of akin to I'd rather be healthy than normal.
