A new wrinkle.  My new cardiac Dr. indicated I have anemia--maybe I need to take iron.  In two months he will have me take a new blood test.  After that visit, my regular Dr. had me take another blood test because the last one indicated I had red blood cells that are too big?????  That result came back good--except now it indicates I have too much iron in my blood.  To much?????!!!!!  I have never heard of such a thing.  And I'm still anemic---what?????  I now have an appointment with a hematologist to tell me what is going on.  Or I hope he/she can.  Not knowing is a real pain-in-the-ass!  this Dr. is with a local oncology group--I hope this is not a portent of things to come.  Leave it to me to have a weird condition!!!

Hang in there, Mike. Don't think about the worst. An expert in the specific branch would be able to offer different explanations.

Testosterone can give you large red blood cells.

I also have anemia, and am taking iron (~10 mg/day in a liquid form). Anemia is low red blood cell count, not low iron, though.

And yes, hang in there!

Thanks for pointing that out.  I had assumed that all anemia was because of low iron in the blood.  So, one can still have anemia and still have an iron count too high I guess.  I have never had to worry about anemia until just a couple of months ago.  I have much to learn about all that--waiting until Aug. is a pain-in-the-ass!

My anemia stems from a problem with generating red blood cells. The disorder has an ~25% chance of turning into multiple myeloma, a kind of cancer. It's a race to the finish line as to whether that or old age will get me first. 8^D I'm 69 YO.

I'm rooting for you to win that race!  My condition is partly hereditary.  But I don't remember a relative of any sort having this issue.  I do have diabetes, and terrible arteries (have 6/7 angioplasties)--both make my newly discovered condition worse--or does my condition cause those??  Don't know all that much at this point--hate that.  And I'm 76, that narrows the choices I guess.

Thanks! No telling where things come from, though medical science is getting better about a lot of things, like using the knowledge from AIDS research to develop vaccines for Covid.

Update.  I do not have any form of anemia; as it turns out the transfusion I had in the hospital kind of muddied the blood in that the hematologist said that I needed to wait 3 months before taking another blood test.  did that and learned that I am not anemic, I don't have too much iron in my blood.  but I do have a condition called myelodysplasia which is a condition that can lead to leukemia if not treated.  My hematologist told me I do not have any form of leukemia now, so that was a relief.  One symptom that has plagued me since May is that I go to bed tired, wake up tired and even with naps, am tired all day--every day.  Myelodysplasia is not genetic and is sort of unique for each person who has it; one size treatment does not fit all.  My real birthday present (my birthday is today) will be on the 13th when I have a bone marrow biopsy which will give the Dr. the details she needs to set up a treatment plan tailored for me.  So, if on the 13th you hear what sounds like human screams, that will be me.  She has already given me the drugs to help with the pain--a high anxiety drug for before the biopsy and oxycontin for after.  Oxycontin and thc ought to help me deal with all that. :))  another thing I learned is that my red blood cells are shaped like tear drops and are too large.  It seems I always have to be different.

So, if the treatment is successful, would you say you'd had a... marrow escape?

Weird diseases suck. Let's hope you get a cure soon! I'm tired all the time, diagnosed with sleep apnea and waiting for the machine. I ingest mass quantities of coffee to function.

I used a machine for over 10 years and found it very helpful.  I do miss it still, even though the Dr. said I don't need it any more.  And coffee is goooooood!!!  Yes, weird diseases really do suck. :)

It is very good that you are proactive Mike, early diagnosis is key! You are in my thoughts, hoping for the best.

Good to read you again. I had a cardiac artery bypass graft a year ago August. Came through fine. Good luck to you!
