I seemingly often get asked if certain movies were based on true events. Sometime ridiculously so.

This isn't even the weirdest one. But today's entry, what i got asked today:

The martian
"If we have to go down, we go down together!"
- Your mum, last night, requesting 69.

Atheist Mantis does not pray.

For me, 300 was a bit difficult to explain to non-comics readers...

I have to ask- why do people ask you this? Are you in the movie biz? I'm relatively new here, so maybe I'm missing something.

LOL, have you seen "Meet the Spartans"?

"Based on true events" is a very loose term when it comes to entertainment, "Inspired by true events" is even more suspect.

I just watched a Robin Williams movie on YouTube I'd never heard of, called Man of the Year, in which the main character, played by Robin Williams, runs for president. What a great movie! Have any of y'all seen it? Parts of it put me in mind of Trump's run for that office, but only a little. It's got some other great actors as well, such as Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black and Christopher Walken.

The Da Vinci Code. It's continued for some time, esp. with the movie.

I used to make them take the oath first, and then pass the secrets, Da Vinci has taught me in detail. We have grown to be quite a crowd.

The year that came out was a wild year.  People were suddenly VERY interested in Da Vinci, the Vatican, secret societies, etc.

And the book was treated with a sort of credulity I didn't encounter again until the Mayan 2012 craze.

It's just a silly fictional book, people!  It's okay to like fiction.  It's okay to really, really like fiction.  But it's not okay to get fiction confused with reality!

I was a res asst. in the art history department, under the western history of art chair, in the oldest, biggest univ over here back then. Gawd, I hate historical fiction.

You must hate Turtledove then.

I know the name, but I don't know the material. The problem with historical fiction rises when writers purposefully mess up with certain breaking points for gain, create events, impressions with an agenda. Otherwise, it's OK. My personal taste obviously doesn't matter, but sometimes, it's pretty entertaining and good. Like Bruno Helen did with Rome. Spartacus on the other hand...LOL  Then there is Barbara Cartland. She took it very seriously.

I doubt if any of it could get close to how fucked up and astonishing the history is anyway, lol.
