We got a slowing global economy AND high stock market valuations AND run-away inflation. All we need is bell bottoms pants. That 70's stagflation lasted a decade and old people were eating dog food and freezing to death. Are we any smarter now? Yuk, Yuk, Yuk.

Yuk, yuk, yuk is right.  In fact, it seems to me we are headed to 1270's in many, many ways.

Hm. I figured that this was going to be about the leaked SCOTUS draft of the striking down of Roe V Wade. Those people. Gladly, many states have standing laws allowing abortions. I wore bell bottoms when I was in the Navy- "Seafarers"- I still like them, but I don't think that they are produced anymore. I'd go with a flared leg, these days, anyway, as in "boot cut", even though I don't wear boots.

I'm down for some bell bottoms... I love men's fashion from back then as well, much more use of patterns and colors (including pastels and paisleys) that almost conveyed how global and flavorful society was... instead of going back towards that more Victorian "dark-and-bland" aesthetic that is as antithetic to joy as our modernist and brutalist architecture is.

Like after a few decades or so of celebrating our victory in WW2, we suddenly decided that instead of continuing that momentum it was better to cash in our the wealth and culture we had generated and coast to retirement... which is okay in say a business, but not quite so much a world where people have to live in.

But who knows, my generation will probably do the same if we survive this coming storm; that might just be the nature of all mankind.

Edit: Hell, even in my post I transitioned from lively and happy to very quickly bland and depressing; even my subconsciousness buys into it without me knowing :(.

I begged my mother for bellbottom jeans but she refused, considering denim déclassé at the time. I remember kids at school asking me why I wore "church clothes" to school.

I was thinking the other day of the success of the 1970s "Keep America Beautiful" anti-littering campaign. I remember back when it was commonplace for people to toss fast food containers out the window while driving. There were also I lot more abandoned cars that just stayed on the side of the roads. That kind of littering is no longer the norm.

Life is different for American kids in 2022 compared to 1972. In many ways, it is better but in some ways, it is worse. The suicide rate in 1970 for people aged 15-24 in 1970 was 8.8%, in 2020 it was 14.24%.

That statistic gets worse the more I think about it; first it was the fact that relatively close to 1 in 5 will kill themselves, then the fact that even in the 70s nearly 1 in 10 would feel there is no point living... even that seems too damn high, because that 8.8% is still larger then the current % of Americans that identify as gay (7.1%) who make up a viable % of the population... or even crazier, the current number would be like losing 3x the Asian American population (5.1%) every year.

I was playing 4-square during PE alongside the courts where the boys were playing 'war' with a medicine ball. The coach was playing on one team, and he kept nailing this heavyset boy really hard while saying "run fatso, run". I yelled "stop that" and everyone started laughing. We didn't have cyber-bullies to worry about but back then an asshole could really make your life miserable and there was zero recourse. In fact, anyone who was different had a rough time, but they would say "it's good for you, toughen ya up". My father beat up my brother for coming home crying after losing a fight. Yet still, I would not trade it for being young today.

As an amateur Stoic, I can't relate to this vein of "doom and gloom" narrative here.

And I'm not sympathetic to the notion of people who willfully take their life, sans a terminal illness or unavoidable scenario. Not simply because they "no longer find Xbox games enjoyable" or something like that.

I won't mitigate the fact that problems in life arise, but the fact is that from a purely material perspective, most people still live in relative luxury, so the roots of suicide and disaffectedness in life have to run deeper than that. (And I'll try to avoid the converse of overly blaming materialism or material convenience for sucking the joy out of life, since unless a person wants to give up all their possessions and go live in a cave, that's not something which can entirely be avoided or blamed).

I read a local news story about gasoline being stolen from people's vehicles. Siphoning gas definitely reminds me of the 70s.

I'm old enough to remember bell bottoms.  I don't know why the fashion industry has been trying to bring them back ever since they left.  Let them stay dead.

As for the rest ... yes, we are headed for the 1970s.  Inflation, stagnation, unemployment, recession, the whole nine yards.  Except this time it will be worse.
