Congress Creates More Sunlight

I received this in an email:

QuoteIf you didn't see the news, we just passed the Sunshine Protection Act in the Senate – a bipartisan bill that would end the twice-annual changing of our clocks and afford Americans everywhere more sunshine.

It's simple legislation, but we passed it based on the basic premise that people across the country are tired of arbitrarily changing the clocks and sacrificing sunlight. Now, it's onto the House where I'm hoping that it again passes with bipartisan support.

I'm all for more sunlight, except when it's night and I want to sleep.  It's not always the best thing when we have a drought, but this is just another example of Congress attaching a name to a bill that has nothing to do with the bill.  The one good thing about this, is that it's something I don't much give a shit about, as opposed to the other things they do which are mostly unhelpful.  And then there are the things that require serious attention, which they refuse to solve, because they're too valuable as hot button issues they can blame the other side for.

I'm still amazed at how much we have to pay these people.

Making Daylight Savings Time permanent is something they been talking about for decades. We live on the eastern edge of our time zone so it gets dark really early in the winter. About 4:30 at the solstice. An extra hour of light in the evenings in winter would be a good thing as far as I'm concerned. DST already pushes the latest sunset out to around 8 in the summer which is still before my bedtime so no problems there either.

How about just shifting the Prime Meridian one timezone to the west? The whole world would benefit from all the light. I think it's "to the west."  This time thing confuses me.

What I hate is moving the clock--so, I don't care if it is DST or standard; chose one.  And they did.  I am still feeling the effects (and my furry children are too) of the time change.  It throws everything off.  I am still amazed that congress did something positive.

Yeah, it's like jet lag. Feeding los doggos the last couple of days was easy, because I get up at pretty much the same time each day anyway. It's worse for them falling back, because they have to potentially wait an extra hour for food- I feed them twice a day (plus a snack in the middle). I get up early when the clock goes back. I try to keep the dogs not guessing about their next mealtime. Man, they have it good!

Sounds like me. :)  I feed mine twice a day with a dental chew between.  I get up at roughly the same time in the morning.  And my dogs act like an alarm clock. :))  They make sure I get up early because I take them for a walk as soon as I get dressed.  If I had a choice, I'd reincarnate as one of them next time around. :))

Human time keeping is purely our own construct. Biological clocks, on the gripping hand, are usually pretty hard to reset.

Why are they planning to make DST permanent instead of making standard time, I don't know, standard?

Maybe because influential business groups like the idea that, with an extra hour of evening sunlight, people will drive more and spend more. Standard time is based more on the movement of the sun and is more aligned with circadian rhythms.

Indiana lies on the extreme west side of the Eastern Time Zone, so in the summer you get a few days when the sun doesn't go completely down until 9 PM. Best days of the year if you're an outdoor person. This will be permanent when the law goes in, "after work" interval gets more light every day.
