Hell, I don't know.  However, for what it's worth, and according to Oscar Isaac as he explained to his would be girlfriend in the movie, "Casinos don't do anything to you if you count cards and win modestly.  If your counting and winning big, well then... ."  I think that sentence was left unfinished, but I understood it to mean that they would take some kind of action.

I have no idea what the truth was there, or if there was any truth that they broke your fingers 20 years ago.  When you think about it, there's nothing wrong with counting cards.  It's a skill possessed by some blackjack experts, and you don't automatically assume a consistent winner at high stakes Texas Holdem' is cheating.  Some guys are just good at what they do.  I would assume there is less moral restraint by the casinos themselves that rig the slot machines and roulette wheels.  I don't know that, however.  It's just a guess.  I don't gamble.  I don't even find it very interesting.

I had a good run of cards at the Flamingo Hilton "a few years ago". The pit boss came 'round and watched me for a while. Then he told the dealer "He can stay, he's not counting." I cleared ~$5K that night.

I just saw Spider-Man: No Way Home. A friend of mine bought me a ticket out of the blue, which was cool of him. Seeing it in theaters was an experience. People went wild...several times. I can't say why without spoiling anything, but yeah. They knew what the fans wanted, and they gave it to them. Sometimes that kind of thing can come off as superficial and hollow, but this is fan service done right. I'd put this movie up there with Into the Spider-Verse, which was very similar in a lot of ways.

Spoilers below...
So yeah. Not only did we get Tobey Maguire's and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, we also got Matt Murdock from the Netflix series. So that's officially canon now. Very nice. He's only there for a minute, but his inclusion felt natural. Peter's in legal trouble, so he's helped by a lawyer. One who happens to know what it's like to live a double life. Flash turns out to be kind of a dick. He's still a Spider-Man fan, but he just wants to exploit him. Oh well...

Garfield Spider-Man getting his moment of redemption was well done. It made me stop and realize how good the acting is in this. Even Dafoe, with his goofy version of Green Goblin, felt simultaneously faithful to the original film and yet not out of place at all in the MCU. It probably helps that he ditches his mask pretty early on, in favor of a new look. All of the Spider-Men play off of each other very well. I wonder if we'll be seeing them again. Probably not, but it might be cool to get a Spider-Man 4 or Amazing Spider-Man 3, just to tie up any remaining loose ends. All we really get about how things are going is that Tobey has a complicated relationship with his MJ, and Andrew developed a bit of a rage issue. Andrew never really figured out what the deal was with his father, and this movie was the closest thing to the Sinister Six we've gotten.

I think they used some de-aging technology to make the villains look the same age as they were in their original films. Maybe Dafoe didn't need it, but I think Alfred Molina was de-aged a bit. If so, it was very convincing. Good enough to have me questioning if they really did anything to his face, at least.

I feel like there are a few unanswered questions, though. When the villains are sent back, do they alter the timeline so that they all live, or do they create new timelines for each? When Tobey and Andrew go home, are those cured villains there too, or are they still dead? If Venom is here, since he shows up in the mid-credits scene, that means he has to know a Peter in his universe, right? I was kind of confused about that. But I'm glad how that was handled. I didn't want Venom to become MCU canon. Fortunately for me, that Venom is still in his own separate universe, but he left behind a bit of the symbiote. I'm predicting it will attach itself to Flash, who will become Agent Venom in a future movie.

My interpretation of the ending is that Peter decided to leave MJ and Ned alone, because they were both happy, and re-inserting himself into their lives would put them both in danger. Noble, but goddamn it, Peter. You promised. These Spider-Men have a habit of leaving loved ones behind to keep them safe. Except Garfield, but you know how that ended. I wonder if they'll be back, or if he'll really just move on and find new friends and girlfriends.

The end-credits scene was practically a whole trailer. My god. Usually, it's just a few seconds long, just to tease us.
I recently saw the trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie. It somehow evaded my notice at first. I..uhh...have mixed feelings about this. I--like a lot of people--had hoped they'd go full animation this time around, but no such luck. More of the same, then. Oh well. Jim Carrey also still does not look like Eggman. He has the silly mustache this time, but...yeah. Pretty much all the hopes people had for the sequel seem to be gone. But the last movie was decent, so maybe this one will be too. It's not the Sonic movie we wanted, but maybe it'll still be serviceable.

On the bright side, the robots look more like Badniks this time. Knuckles also seems pretty cool. I'll probably watch it, unless I hear reviews that it's just totally awful.

Based on the trailer, some have suggested that this could be a mixed adaptation of both Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure. Certain scenes are suspiciously similar to scenes from the Adventure game, such as when we see water bursting out of the manholes. Or when Sonic's watching the police pass by from the top of the building, as he did just before meeting Chaos for the first time. Sonic and Tails also seem to be flying the Tornado towards what looks like a flying fortress (and an actual tornado, ironically). The Egg Carrier, perhaps? This could just be a coincidence, of course, and it probably is. You'd think if Chaos was going to be the central antagonist of the film, they'd show him in the trailer, but who knows? Maybe they'll pull a Batman v. Superman and show him in the second trailer.

Anyway, we see what looks like a Chaos Emerald, or maybe the Master Emerald? They changed a lot of the Sonic lore for the previous film, so who knows what they might change this time, but at least the emeralds seem to be making some sort of a comeback. Knuckles also appears to have a similar lightning-energy that gives him his strength, similar to Sonic's, which gives him his speed. This might be hinting at something. Maybe they're like living Chaos Emeralds or something? Maybe they were infused with their energy from birth, giving them their powers? I have to wonder if Tails will have a similar energy that gives him his power of flight, or if that will just be a natural ability of his. A fox twirling its two tails around to gain lift never really made sense, but Sonic never really obeyed the laws of physics anyway. I mean, he flies around on the wings of a plane, as if that makes sense.

My predictions for this movie: Eggman will somehow trick Knuckles into thinking Sonic is the enemy (as he did in the games, multiple times). While he hopes Knuckles will be able to kill Sonic, Eggman's probably working a different angle too. Since Knuckles is the guardian of the emeralds (presumably, that's still true), he may be planning to find Knuckles' secret hiding spot while he's busy fighting Sonic. Once he gets his hands on the Chaos Emeralds / Master Emerald, he uses them to power his ultimate weapon. At this point, Knuckles realizes he's been tricked and reluctantly teams up with Sonic. What's Eggman's secret weapon? Well, it could be the Death Egg, but that would be predictable. I think, in this adaptation, he'll use the power of the emeralds to fuel Metal Sonic, with the speed of Sonic and the strength of Knuckles. Knuckles will use his position as guardian to somehow bestow the powers of the emeralds onto Sonic, who will transform into Super Sonic and defeat Metal.

I find it odd that anyone had hope for a video game adaptation, let alone Sonic. Just play the games.

People liked the last one. My initial viewing of it was positive, and I still think it was fine, but it definitely wasn't anywhere near as awful as the first trailer made it look. And I'm not just talking about that original model for Sonic. I mean, it was like they were trying to make the movie look as cliched and terrible as possible with that first trailer. That trailer made me think that changing Sonic's model would be like trying to polish a turd.

Also, Detective Pikachu was a good movie. Way better than Sonic, IMO, but it somehow didn't get as much praise. Why aren't they making a sequel to that movie?

Also, also, if you don't think Sonic would work well as a movie...

Watch this and tell me a movie in this style wouldn't work. Ever since Unleashed came out, Sonic fans have been asking for a CGI movie like what they gave us in the opening.

Spiderman: No Way Home was very good.  Marvel might get back on track.  But then Spiderman has always been one of their most popular.  I think I like this one best of all, but it's splitting hairs.

Don't Look Up. Pretty simple and accurate. I liked it. It's a good telling of human culture. Also, the movie overall is a feeling I have been feeling for 15 years. It's the zeitgeist.

I liked Don't Look Up too.  Rotten Tomatoes trashed it, although audiences seemed to like it.  I would describe it as fun in kind of sickening way.  It does a pretty good job of satirizing the dysfunctional government that democracy has become.

Imho, Sonic was definitely the better movie.  But part of it could be expectations.  People have high expectations for Pokemon, so when they come out with a movie that's good but not fantastic, it gets a pretty lukewarm reception.  With Sonic, that trailer looked bad and I mean BAD, so when they reworked it and came out with a genuinely good movie, it got a standing ovation.  (Hell, I saw it in theaters twice, which is unusual for me)  Also, Jim Carrey unexpectedly stole the show, which really helped it.

I was surprised when I heard that the Sonic movie was good. I didn't expect that changing Sonic's model would save the movie, since the trailer made it look so awful. When I saw it, I liked it, but it still doesn't live up to Sonic's potential. I expected something on the level of the Chipmunks movie, or Woody the Woodpecker, or any of those other movies where they take a cartoon character and put them in the real world. So yeah, when I saw that it wasn't that bad, I was pleased. But the movie was still held back by its use of live-action.

Detective Pikachu, on the other hand, used live action to its advantage, mixing with CGI based on the artwork of a well-known artist who makes Pokemon look more realistic. The Pokemon in the movie don't look out of place, unlike Sonic. They created a world that is much more believable and interesting. I also think the acting and humor was better in Detective Pikachu, but that might just be me. The Mr. Mime scene in particular was hilarious.

Jim Carrey was fun in Sonic, and I'm glad he's returning, but Sonic the movie is no Liar Liar or Ace Ventura.

Don't Look Up

Satire with an all star cast about a couple of scientists that discover a comet that is going to wipe out Earth only to find out no one cares.

Not the best movie I've seen but worth a watch as it was inspired by current events.

Not the best for me, because it exaggerates human stupidity beyond what I consider reality.  But then that's only based on my expectation of reality.  But this is a purely technical criticism.  While it's unsettling on those grounds, I loved this film.  The writers and director seemed to know exactly what their goal was, and while it pushes limits of credibility, they get away with it.  I like to hear a review from a flaming right winger and see how he/she was affected by the film.  Will he blow it off as absurd, recognize himself, or believe the movie is unconstitutional?
