Title: Stop fucking whining and fight against real inequality.
Post by: Jannabear on February 22, 2016, 09:43:29 PM
This is going to be a rant, so if you don't want to see me angry don't read it.
I've noticed something present among the lgbt community, many people are ready to complain when someone makes a gay joke or makes a joke of a stereotype, but when there are actual disgusting inequalities, they're silent, they don't care.
It's a disgusting state of affairs when someone makes a joke, and everyone loses their shit, but when shit like what's going on in south dakota http://thinkprogress.org/…/south-dakota-daugaard-transgend…/
or the epidemic of transgender people attempting suicide at a massive rate before the age of 18, or the fact that transgender kids can be denied starting hormones by their parents, or the fact that many states don't do enough to stop discrimination in the work place, it seems no one gives a fuck about this, or very few do, it wouldn't take me more then 10 seconds to find someone bitching about how x comedian made a gay joke, but it would take me a while to find someone seriously worried about this, outside of a few people who have any common sense.
Someone start taking actual fucking issues seriously, I'm not going to sit by and watch more transgender students, and kids, and adults off themselves at the disgusting rate they do while people bitch about someone being politically incorrect.

Many of these people who complain about this trivial shit like jokes and words seem to overlap with people who try to discourage proper treatment of conditions because they confuse something being morally bad with pragmatically bad. They think: hey i have autism and that does not mean im lesser as a person, that means there's nothing wrong with me and i should not take any treatment. And this behavior is encouraged by echochambers that ban dissenting opinion. Just look at this surreal discussion i was involved in a intersectional feminist page with more than 300k followers. Of course i was banned after the guy i was arguing got tired of being unable to understand my points and called the thought police to put me away.

Whats wrong with parents denying kids hormones? That shit fucks up adults, I don't even want to think of what it could do to someone still developing.

I guess it is for the case in which an actual profesional is prescribing them. I have not really looked that much into what the treatment of gender dysphoria is like and the results and risks, the only thing i remenber is that post operation trans people still commited suicide pretty much as often as pre operation. Though i never actually saw where that number came from. If the treatment is not really that straight forward, effective and posses big risks. I think it should be left to the discretion of the parents. If it is simple like taking a rabies shots after a dog bite then it should be criminal not to do it and let your kid suffer.

in america the suicide attempt rate of transgender people is 40+ percent before the age of 18, the fact that people can deny kids who's gone through proper counseling and blood draws hormones is fucking child abuse.

And I know from personal experience, my parents repeatedly denied me hormones, and weren't supportive, and I was extremely depressed, and had problems with cutting do to this.

My cursory research of the side effects of these hormones produced a list as long as my arm. I think that puts parents in a tough position. If you deny your kid the hormones, thats child abuse according to you. On the other hand if you let a kid take a powerful drug that is, at its core, medically unnecessary and has a lot of detrimental side effects there are plenty of people who would also consider that to be child abuse.

Medically unnecessary, because going through the wrong type of puberty doesn't make you more likely to kill yourself, or more likely to have a horrible sex life, or life in general.
You look at humans as if they were dogs if that's the mindset, emotional stability, mental state, none of that matters apparently.

I think im doing better than you, since you don't seem to give a shit about their bodies or their minds. Has it occurred to you that not only are these hormone treatments potentially dangerous, but they might also ruin someones adult life? Heres a news flash for you, there is no way to tell if a kid who feels that they are the wrong gender as a child will still feel that way when they are an adult. Some do, some dont, but giving them hormones, especially the puberty blockers, might just as easily set them up for a miserable adult life as not.

Its a parents responsibility to make sure their kid makes it to adulthood as safely as possible, with as many opportunities as possible. Its prudent, in my opinion, to wait until adulthood to ensure that a child is really, FOR SURE, transgendered so that they can make their own decision about it and theres no chance for a mishap medical or otherwise.

Some trandgendered kids will kill themselves. I think there are OTHER ways to prevent that aside from letting a child make adult decisions that they may come to regret making for the rest of their lives.

He is completely assimilated he's got the narrative, the memes and the buzzwords. The sad thing is I actually wanted to help him see the world was not really as horrible as he felt it was. But obviously the mods had to ban me and help confirm and cement his believe that the world truly hates him and that only bigots trying to oppress him would try to say otherwise. This is probably one of the most disturbing aspects of SJW echochambers the negligent normalization and even glorification of mental disorder.

As per the hormone treatment deal, I don't feel like it would be medically sound to prescribe such a treatment before the brain fully develops. A transgender child should get counseling, and should have the opportunity to live as the gender of their choice, but I feel like medical intervention at such a stage is unnecessary and potentially dangerous. 18 to 21 is still early enough for the hormones to do their job properly. Hell, I know a MTF woman about 45 years of age who only began hormone treatment a few years ago. She looks like a woman with smaller tits, but according to her they're growing. She's also ex military, before the transition she was a muscle bound hulk of a man. Now she's a feminine flower. I'm not saying hormone treatment is psychologically unnecessary, but that with proper counseling and upbringing it can be delayed until the brain develops more. The teenaged brain is a dangerous thing to mess with, take this from a guy who took (and still takes) SSRIs .

As per the topic at hand, maybe I pick my friends well. Yeah, we'll still get mad if a certain fighter *cough cough* makes homophobic statements, but we do get up in arms about things like Georgia's proposed anti LGBT "religious freedom" bill that passed the senate. We also make the same gay jokes homophobes do. I have weird friends.

Yeah, because going through a big part of your life as the wrong gender, and developing parts of you that will be UNCHANGEABLE isn't COMPLETE FUCKING TORTURE.

I didn't say anything to support dipshit parents who don't understand biology or neurology. Nobody understands the subject remotely besides the people who are experts on it. When the field is  medicine (hard science) this expertise is not something we can pass angry-emotional comments on according to what we feel. So what I mean is that loading hormones to a body to change its chemical system in a way is not an issue just limited with not providing the treatment because of bigotry. In this sense, 'I think I'll trust a person's sense of agency' is not so much different than, 'I think I'll trust what I feel about my health'. Playing with hormones is not a joke. Needlessly to say,  peolle should be able to get what they need.

Life is full of inequality and being born one gender or the other is pretty small peanuts in the grand scheme of things.  50 years ago very few if anyone even talked about transgender issues much less acted on it.  Go back a bit further in time and these procedures were impossible so people lived with how they were born.  30 years ago there were almost no internet forums and the few that existed were called BBS's limited to the few people who even had access to computers.
This aside there is a role for parents to play in making decisions about the future of their kids and it's seldom easy.
I'm sure my kids thought it was entirely unreasonable that I made them eat soup more than once a month.
News Flash!  Life isn't fair. When it becomes fair for everyone be sure to let us know.

I agree with Jannabear. If a professional thinks it would be best for the transgender person's mental health for them to take hormones, then I think they should be able to start taking the hormones. What percentage of transgender people change their minds and revert back to what they were identified as originally anyways? Is it a big chunk of them, or not really? I wouldn't think it would be that large a percentage, or at least not large enough to say "Don't let young people take hormones because they might change their minds later."

Some people here think it should be up to the parents, or that a transgender person shouldn't be able to take hormones until they are at least 18, even if a professional says they should be taking the hormones way before the age of 18, like taking the hormones as a preteen or young teenager.

I think the real issue here is whether or not a real professional would say that a kid should be taking hormones. If so, what sort of professional are we talking about exactly? I have a super hard time imagining any pediatrician giving the thumbs up to this sort of thing. The doctor responsible for a child's health is not going to be on board with something that has no medical purpose, stunts development, and leads to life long complications.

So if its not the pediatrician, who is it?

OK.

Do you believe this issue is just as simple as letting minors get filled with hormones because they want it? Not even close.

This is something huge. This is not some treatment or a cure that will heal them from a disease and leave them with what they want just like that. It's a long complicated process in many levels. A minor is a person who is not fully developed. Neither physically, nor mentally. He doesn't have the mental fortitude to make this decision that is why she/he is defined as minor. This is the field of medicine. Just before jumping on 'bigotry', there are countless reasons why medicine favours conservative approaches at most times. (That conservative is not the one we hate.)

Saying something like 'yes if they feel like it, they should get it' is just a reflexive, knee jerk ideal. It's just empowering to say it. It just doesn't fit in reality. If we could have a way to measure this objectively along with its effect on each individual, yes I would jump on that. Give it to them! We don't. And not just this, but many other things don't work this way in medicine.

When you look at this from an individual's aspect, it is pretty bad. I can build the empathy.

This is also about changing

-a fundamental principle in medicinal law concerning parental rights, parental care and children's rights. It's not something that you can tweak and change without affecting any other thing, medicinal or not.

-and another fundamental principle of law that 'do minors have a rights over themselves to make this kind of decisions about any aspects of their lives'?

-if they have, why not any other?

-if all, why under 18 is defined as minor?

-if shouldn't, where the minor definition starts?

...etc.

This is not an issue of 'if they want it, they should have it'.

I agree with this, the hormone treatment seems to be pretty messy coupled with the difficulty of diagnosing. I imagine this as a child in need a of complex risky surgery or a treatment with significant chances of complications or undesired side effects. It should be left to the parents to be consistent with the current rules and ethics.

It's easy enough for us as non-transgender people to say that the hormone therapy is not something that is medically necessary. I'm not so sure transgender people would agree with that. Going through puberty can be almost unbearable for a transgender person, so I think a good argument can be made that this is a necessity. Some may think calling it torture is going too far, but I agree with Janna here. Torture is not such a bad way of describing what you are making someone go through, when they have the brain of a female, but you are forcing them to go through puberty as a boy. Nature made a mistake by not matching the transgender person's brain with their body, so why should they be forced to go through puberty as a boy, when they are not a boy? If they don't have the brain of a boy, they are not a boy and should not be forced to be one. If you are refusing to let your kid take puberty blockers, I think a good case can be made for that being child abuse. We're not just talking about a minor making decisions for themselves. A professional has to agree that the minor is indeed transgender like they claim and they don't have other mental issues, and a professional has to agree that the person is ready for the puberty blockers/ hormone replacement and that they are healthy enough to take them.

If you let them go through puberty, you now have changes that are undesired and can't be reversed. So, when these kids get older, they are now going to be getting surgeries and other treatment that wouldn't have been necessary with the puberty blockers. That's messed up. It really doesn't seem fair that parents can say that they don't want nature's mistake to be fixed, or at least somewhat fixed, when we have the ability to do that and to improve the well being of these people. Yeah, there are risks, but where aren't there risks in life? All of life is a risk and the risk with this is quite small. I would get around the "person is a minor" thing by looking at this as something that is medically necessary. This should all be free as well.

ï,§ Heightened safety concerns due to cultural discrimination & transphobic violence
ï,§ Heightened levels of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem

ï,§ Use of black market hormones
ï,§ Subcutaneous injection of industrial grade silicone to create feminine body contours
ï,§ Substance abuse and sexual exploitation
ï,§ Harassment, mistreatment or discrimination at work (90%)
ï,§ Negative impact on earning ability (4X as likely to have household income under $10k)
ï,§ 2X as likely to be unemployed as general population (4X as likely for people of color)
ï,§ Generally poor future earning ability, employability and overall quality of life.

Yeah. I thought the same thing, that his name sounds like that, but he's a character from a Japanese cartoon...

I was making a joke about how Baruch brought in a fictional character by bringing in a fictional character myself. I guess it didn't make that much sense because I just woke up.

From the dragonball wikipedia:

For example, the one in control of the Saiyans and other villainous aliens is Frieza. Strictly speaking, Frieza is “freezer”, but I envisioned a refrigerator when I named him. So, I grouped the names according to foods that go inside it. The Saiyans are vegetables [yasai, “vegetables”], and the Ginyu Force are dairy products [gyūnyū, “cows’ milk”], like that."
â€" Akira Toriyama - Super Exciting Guide: Character Volume interview

This is a list of origins of character names in the Dragon Ball franchise. Each character's name, particularly their original Japanese name, is a pun on regular words, often the names of various foods.

Contents[show]
Races
Saiyan (Saiya-jin) - In Japanese, saiya is formed by rearranging the syllables of the Japanese word yasai which means "vegetable".
Tuffle (Tsufuru-jin) - In Japanese, tsufuru is formed by rearranging the syllables of the Japanese word furutsu which means "fruit".
Namekian (Nameksei-jin) - In Japanese, namek is a shortening of the Japanese word namekuji which means "slug".
Majin - Can be translated as "demon". Ma (é") means evil or demon. Jin (人) means human or person. It is also sometimes translated as "genie" (i.e. Viz's translation of the manga uses "djinn")

Saiyans
All full-blooded Saiyans' names are puns on various vegetable names.

Vegeta (Bejīta) - The first six letters of "vegetable".
Tarble (Tāburu) - Believed to be taken in English as 'Table', making this name another a pun on "vegetable", particularly its last five letters. Curiously, this would mean both Tarble and his brother Vegeta's names pun "vegetable".
Bardock (Bādakku) - A pun on a Japanese root vegetable, a "Burdock".
Borgos (Totepo) - A pun on "potato".
Broly (Burorī) - A pun on "broccoli".
Cabe (Kabe) - A pun on "cabbage".
Fasha (Seripa) - In Japanese, formed by rearranging the letters in "parsley".
Gine - Derives from negi (è'±), the Spring Onion in Japanese.
Kakarot (Kakarotto) - Goku's birth name, an interesting mutation of "carrot".
Nappa - A Japanese term for greens in general, especially grape leaves.[1] Also a form of cabbage, keeping with other Saiyans using English words as the source of their names.
Onio (From Neko Majin) - A pun on "onion".
Paragus (Paragas) - In Japanese, a loose translation of "asparagus" (in the English dub, the name uses the same spelling as the word, sans the 'as-').
Raditz (Radditsu) - Derives from "radish".
Scarface (Panbukin) - In Japanese, panbukin is a pun on "pumpkin".
Shorty (Brocco) - A pun on "broccoli".
Shugesh (Panbukin) - In Japanese, panbukin is a pun on "pumpkin".
Tora (Toma) - A shortening of "tomato".
Turles (Tāresu) - In Japanese, formed by rearranging the syllables in "lettuce"

The oppression card is one of the most pathetic card ever played provided they aren't actually being oppressed. It reeks of self-entitlement and attention seeking. I believe that human's should be treated equally, but some people don't recognize their privilege.

Right. Circle the wagons mentality is a hallmark of the religious. Turns out much of the martyrdom of early Christianity was heavily mythicized. I love that word.

You have a strange idea of what "equality" is.  Transgender people being at greatly higher risk for suicide is a "tragedy", not an "inequality", for instance.  Kids being denied elective prescription drugs by their parents is "parenting", not "inequality", for another example.

I know you don't see this because you don't seem to see it in anyone, but I like you.  Sure, you're pissed off all the time, but hey, I would be to in your shoes.  I assume they're heals and damned uncomfortable (I hope that came off as funny, not dickish).  But I do like you and I do care about your pain.  But you seem to be under this impression that "rights" for transgender people means "doing whatever the fuck I want".  I know you don't mean it that way, but that is actually how you feel.  Using whichever bathroom you want, to quote a recent discussion.  This is not a "right" any Americans have, but you think it should be one, specifically and only, for you.  Parents have the right to determine what medical procedures and prescription drugs their kids take, but once again you want to carve out a special niche just for transgender people.  It really hurts your cause when you can't tell the difference between what should be a "right" and what you just wish were true.  I really wish all parents were understanding with their children, but when it comes down to the kid wanting one thing and the parents wanting another for that kid, under the age of 18, the parent wins.  That's just the way it is.  I know kids who were forced to attend church until they moved out.  The kids didn't want to, the parents wanted them to, the parents won.  One of them eventually committed suicide and I am convinced that fucked up church played a huge role in the mental state that led to that.

You should focus on things like equality in the workplace, equal housing, all the shit that are rights ALL OF US should have because we can ALL agree that ALL OF US should have that right.  If I have that right and you don't because you're transgender, THEN I get pissed off about it.  And that's what you need to be doing; get other people pissed of FOR you, not AT you.  You definitely have some things to be pissed about, but for the love of Spaghetti, PLEASE stick to issues that really should be "rights" and not things you just think are unfair.  I am not transgender and even I remember thinking how unfair life seemed when I was a kid.  My parents didn't let me do this, the school demanded I do that...  It's part of childhood.  If there's a disagreement between what you want and what your parents want, you lose.  Hell, you lose when it's between what you want and what just about ANY adult wants.

I really, REALLY want to agree with you.  I WANT to be on your side.  I know you're not wrong in your basic premise.  But in many of the specifics, you're dead wrong.  In many of the specifics you're not looking for "equality", you're looking for "special treatment".  I know it doesn't feel that way, but you are.  Find the common ground with EVERYONE and everyone will agree with you.  And the common ground with everyone is rights EVERYONE should have.
