Title: Any Board Gamers Around Here?
Post by: gentle_dissident on December 16, 2015, 05:19:47 PM
Within the last few years, I’ve gotten into really old school gaming. I’ve collected MANY games and made a few from templates at https://boardgamegeek.com/ . I’m not very good, but I still find it hard to find people who will play with me. I’m always free at 12:00 AM Central. I’m also free at other times, but that time is guaranteed.

My steam account has Blood Bowl Legendary Edition, Small World, Space Hulk, Talisman, and Ticket to Ride (popular but horrible game).

These are some nice online gaming sites http://www.happymeeple.com/en/ http://www.pente.org/index.jsp http://youplay.it/  http://www.playcatan.com/en/ http://en.boardgamearena.com.

If you have the physical board game Cleopatra and the Society of Architects, we can play online here http://www.daysofwonder.com/cleopatra/en/ .

If you play chess, you probably have a favorite site. If you feel like schooling me, let me know. I promise to disappoint.

Send me a PM if you want to game, but please, reply here about anything board game related.

I've played chess for about 40 years, and enjoyed many other board games, as well. It's hard for me to find anyone else to play with, since I prefer being alone most of the time.

Ever played Twixt, or Feudal?.

I haven't played either. Here's my collection https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/androidlove?own=1&subtype=boardgame&gallery=large&ff=1

I have some RPG's not listed and a couple of games not in the BGG database yet.

I am 20 hours away from 1000 hours on Civ V.

Edit: Derp... I just realized this was the board game thread. Just gonna... slowly walk out...

Sid's Civ is a very popular board game. I haven't picked it up because I haven't come across it at a deep discount. I'd prefer a 90% discount, but I'll pay a little more. My games are life insurance. They should at least get me cremated.

Yeah I played one pretty regularly... 10 or so years ago. I enjoyed it but I don't think we ever actually finished a game.

I like chess. As Well as other board/card games in general. Apart from chess i haven't played them online much. Isn't half the fun playing it irl with friends?

I like Monopoly and Risk.  HeroQuest was great fun to DM.

Haven't played a non-electronic board game in ages, though.  But lately, I've been watching Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day's Tabletop show and it's gotten me interested again.  I'm thinking about getting either Dead of Winter or Betrayal at House on Haunted Hill or Arkham Horror.  Or maybe a deck-building game like Legendary.

My main problem is that I have like 1 other person who is interested and available most of the time.  Then there's the family at Christmas time, but there's no way in hell they'll go for anything with more than a 10-min prep time and lasts longer than an hour, if I can even coax them at all.

Board Games?  Now there's a blast from the past.  I have fond memories of board Games.  I like the new single player computer games too.  They are challenging, stimulating, and if nothing else, I'm amazed by the programming they entail.  Directing an avatar to run around in an almost photo realistic 3D environment is nothing short of stunning.  The work required to create such a game dumbfounds me.  But playing a board game with family brings back great memories.

I understand the logical conundrum I posed. Perhaps that means I'm a secret chess genius since I didn't notice it until you pointed it out.

Yes, board games are best played live. I really notice this playing Talisman on the computer with my daughter who is in the next room. People seem to prefer screens to actual human interaction. I have to adjust by necessity. I'm hoping I can at least give people a desire to leave the screen and play the real thing.

I'm listening to NPR going on about the popularity of video games. The popularity of video games is huge. My family likes to watch me play the N64 or the Atari 2600, but it's hard to get them to play with me. "You're just going to win" is what I hear. I've had luck getting going games of Mario Party, a board game of sorts. I usually win, but the other players are happy to fight over 2nd place. I should fire up the Odyssey 2 and play the cooperative game The Quest for the Rings. It also has an actual board game component. The Odyssey 2 makes me laugh so hard that I come close to passing out.

I have board games that have a video component. So far, I've only got Clue DVD, house ruled for 2 actions, to the table. My family liked it, but they're general Clue fans.

I have a few versions of Risk, as you can see on my BGG collection page. I only have fond memories of watching a hip adult play it when I was a kid. I've been playing Small World on my PC and tablet. I occasionally beat the AI.

I have a complete HeroQuest. I plan on forcing my family and my daughter's friends to play soon. I'll be using some traditional house rules.

I love Tabletop.

I picked up Arkham Horror cheap. I got a chance to play with an actual gamer before he moved far away. I felt like the game played itself and I wound up with a headache from the constant rules referencing. BGG said that this is normal for a 1st play and recommended I read the edited rules from the file section.

Have you played the Hitman GO app? It's more of a puzzle, but I include puzzles in my BGG collection. "Board Games" has a broad definition for me. I include activities like Horseshoes and Tangram.

I'm there right now realizing how much I don't know. Ironically, I've played a lot of Chess in my life. However, I've usually played opponents just as clueless as I. In high school, I would get my butt handed to me by a certified genius. I would get him back in Pente.

I recently played another genius who was raised by a chess master who started teaching him at 5. The game was purely instructional. He sacrificed his queen almost immediately for my sake.

He soon after moved far away. I get the feeling there is a secret town where smart, talented, and creative people are clustered together. I'm still waiting for my invite.

I won't be winning any tournaments with my game of chess.
But I quite like the game itself. My dad started teaching me at a young age. About 5 I'd guess. But he's not a grandmaster or anything. He never let me win. Took me another 5 years or so before I finally could. But when I did, it was one of the proudest moments in my childhood. (Kind of sad, ain't it? :D) But throughout the years I've learned there will always be stronger opponents out there that can kick my ass. Even casual players like me. And that's the fun of playing against someone new.

Anyways, I like chess. And I like chessboards.
My collection.

It came today.....in shrink wrap! Since the girls got themselves Yule Eve presents, I'll open it then. I can hear a tiny piece scooting around in the box. Some cyanoacrylate may be in order. Hopefully it's 1 of the figs I got from American Science and Surplus.

Dragon Strike is mint. The loose pieces were sprue. The VHS will surely be a Yule tradition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTNnYkJwSNU There's loads of room for audience participation.

My GF got us Exploding Kittens. It's low on strategy and high on luck. The girls love that type of game. They were quite pleased that I was the 1st to be eliminated. They also enjoy the humor of the flavor text.

I finally got Small World. I had to hint heavily for 2 years.

I got Space Alert because I mentioned it right before Yule. That's my kind of humor.

I got the family Attacktix: Star Wars and 3 boosters. I saved a lot at a thrift store. It was all NIB. I hope this gets my family into games like Heroscape.

I got Attacktix to the table. It's very enjoyable. We eventually pitted all the figs against each other.

I've been meeting gamers for a game night. As a collective whole, they're more conservative and strange than I. It would be an ongoing hand shaking event. Fortunately, the author of Adventure Maximum, and horror novels, stopped by the store and told me of a group he gets together at the mall. That sounds a lot more enjoyable. I'll send everyone there.

It's hard to get anyone to board game, but I played a couple of games with my GF and our daughter this evening. We played an old wooden Booby-Trap. The previous owner put some impressive metalwork on it to keep track of the bar movement. We also played Exploding Kittens. It's an easy luck driven game, but my family loves it.

I grew up with board games--Had five brothers and a dad who played the hell out of careers, clue, risk, chess and several others.  Played card games, as well--canasta, pinochle, rook, rummy. casino and several others.  Later on played many Avalon Hill games, mostly war games.  Would still play them today, except my dogs get bored very quickly and eat the parts.

Well, that was interesting. It was 2 RPGs, MTG, and 40K (that was fun to type). I enjoyed talking to everyone and watching Dennis, the author, lead some kids through an adventure.

The mall is bare. Despite its cleanliness, the mall is not a fun place due to the vacancies. It's got some anchor stores the city finds useful, but the middle is a ghost town.

JC Penny and Dillard's aren't what they used to be. I've been to both places looking for items that wore out over the years. They don't carry them any more. My choices are synthetically filled pillows, and plastic sandals.

Been sinking too much money in magic

I found MTG to be "pay to play". I got a starter box years ago. I played a game with my GF. We could not find the fun, so I gave it back to the shop for a door prize. Recently, a friend brought over approx 3000 cards to see if I wanted to buy them. He left them with me. I built a red and black deck that whompped a blue and white. The other guy kept setting up fancy attacks, slowly rotating my D20. I kept hammering with indefensible instant mega blows. I won by beating him over the head with the best cards from a huge collection. I didn't even have to think past deck building. My hand played itself.

Even if there is a strategy to match every strategy, I'd rather work in a closed system like Dominion. I imagine that MTG players devote a lot of time following the developments from WOTC. I'd rather put that level of study into chess. Chess boards are everywhere, they are complete, and no pieces have been banned.

I don't know, chess was a lot better when the barbarian was still in between the knight and the rook.

Lol, no I get you. Half the fun of playing MTG to me is playing it with friends who are into it a lot more than me. A great load of it is just hanging out with the guys and drinking some beer while they smoke some pot. If they stopped playing, I'd never play again myself. It's a fun enough game, imo, but not in and by itself worth the price.

Speaking of chess and the barbarian----has anybody played the version of chess from The Chessmen of Mars (Edgar Rice Burroughs)?  The rules were published in the book.  A friend and I in HS built a set--it adds one more row around the edges of the board.  It adds one more piece (well, two more per side), a Flyer I think.  I don't remember how it moves, but that did change the game quite a bit.  Oh, you set up as you would traditionally, so you have an empty row behind your setup.  I remember it as being fun.

You are more than welcome.  The rules are a bit different than my ancient memory remembered.  But I still have a copy of The Chessmen of Mars, so I should have looked them up. :)  It was a fun game as I remember it--and I got that memory accurate I think.  I'd like to play it again--but I have not had any luck teaching my dogs chess yet.  Nobody else around here wants to take the time for stuff like that.

Mf GF and I have been sans daughter for a few days. I looked over at her and said, "let's do something." She asked if I wanted to go to the bedroom. I told her I wanted to play games. Since she is a secret nun, this was more preferable to her. She suddenly liked the idea of thinking instead of zoning. We played rounds of Pente (the promotional John A. Brown board with blue ink). I continually skunked her despite me teaching while talking her through my moves. She's hopelessly green, but Pente comes naturally to me. She had better "skill" at Zombie Dice. We eventually played the entire double feature expansion. We then moved on to 1 game of Flip Out. I played it safe and won.

I've never played Risk, but I've collected a few boards.
1968, 1975, 1993, 2210, and Castle Risk

Risk on Steam gets bad reviews, but this looks promising.

If any of you enjoy mtgo, I'm Mr_Obvious if you ever want to play a friendly match.
I'm pretty bad at it and only have one standard deck yet, but I enjoy playing.

The only board or card games I play are for extreme nerds like myself. Now I can't play a regular deck of cards or board games. I like coup.

I was just thinking that I would *love* to find a group for semi-regular rounds of Illuminati -- either the original small-card edition, or the CCG version.  Love 'em both.

I have an entire closet shelf filled with ACTUAL board games, meaning the kind you put on a table and sit around playing.  Everything from the standards like Scrabble to some games you have never heard of (Camelot?  Feudal?).  I thought I found an old game club locally a few years ago, but they had shut down.  Pity.

So do I.  And yes, I do know Feudal.  Used to like it.  I must have close to 50 of them now; had more.  So, Cavebear, why not grab a few (dozen???) and come on over next weekend.  We could have a hell of a time! :)))

I'm in MD.  That would be one long drive to play Feudal across a table...  ;)

Meh those are all normal board games. Get some real board games like "letters to white chapel" How about a good old frustrating game of elder signs? Those are some games that are fun.

Are those some of those weird Avalon Hill games?  It takes days just to figure out the rules.  Not that I mind doing it.

I'm actually getting back into board games.  My local games store has a couple board game nights a week and a bunch of board games available for demonstration purposes.  (free to play, in the literal sense)

The sheer amount of board games on the shelves is pretty incredible.  Board games really are going through a bit of a millennial boom right now.

My wishlist:

Betrayal at House on the Hill:  Horror-themed exploration RPG.  Someone turns traitor eventually, probably.  RNG (Random Number Goodness).  I also really like that the map is generated differently each time.  Great replay value.

Secret Hitler:  Election-based game of lies and colluding scoundrels trying to get a narcissistic authoritarian maniac into power.  So naturally, there's a Trump version of it.  Also, it's the only game in town where you can bellamy salute in public and it might be considered socially acceptable.  Easy as hell to learn, few pieces to keep track of.  Great party game.

Sushi Go:  Extremely simple but addictive card game where you amass a collection of sushi with kawaii faces.  Weapons-grade cute and extremely family-friendly.  Games typically take <20 minutes.

Forbidden Island/Desert:  Cooperative RPG.  Players VS environmental dangers and a punishing deck of increasingly dire events.

Legendary:  Cooperative card game set in the Marvel universe where plays try to beat a villainous mastermind and his/her henchmen.  Stop, you had me at Marvel.

Betrayal at House on the Hill ... I played this with my daughter when she was a teen.  Good game.  But you need like 4 players.

You worked for government.  Maybe "Secret Hitler" is your style?

Me?  I am 100% serious about my list.

Instead of buying Secret Hitler, I'm contemplating buying The Resistance instead.  It's nearly as good and a lot cheaper.

I also own a game called Epic Spell wars.  It's a relatively simple card game where players take on the persona of insane wizards locked in a battle royale.  Each round, players create spell combinations, usually with unpredictable results.  Last wizard left standing wins!

The artwork alone is glorious.

It's also 300% more fun if you announce your spells in a maniacal voice.
