The United States has longstanding laws against the practice of FGM on U.S. soil and in January, passed a federal law against sending young women outside the country for so-called "vacation cutting". However, girls living in America increasingly are at risk of the procedure both at home and abroad, according to research by Sanctuary for Families.
The New York City-based non-profit organisation, which specialises in gender-based violence, said up to 200,000 girls and women in the United States are at risk of FGM and that the number is growing.
"People in the United States think that FGM only happens to people outside of the United States, but in all actuality, people here all over the country have been through FGM," said Jaha, 23, formerly from Gambia and now a survivor and advocate against FGM.
"Kids that were born in this country are taken back home every summer and undergo this procedure," she was quoted as saying in the report.
Holy crap. I knew it was going on in the USA, probably here in Canada too. This horrid procedure needs to be stopped, need to start a Jedi order that goes around putting an end to injustices like this.

The American Academy Of Pediatrics actually prefers that it is done in the US. They don't want parents bringing their girls to Third-world countries to have it done. It is illegal but if the victim never presses charges it becomes unenforceable.

I was circumcised and i dont consider it to be anywhere near MGM and certainly not comparable to Islamic FGM.

1) There's no way to tell who the father of a child is, so men have to start with virgins, then keep them unavailable to other men. raising another man's son is killing your own genetic line.
2) Because men who treat women as property produce more offspring than men who don't.

When a boy is circumcised, his foreskin is removed. When a girl is "circumcised", her entire clitoris is cut OFF.
It would be analogous to having your penis cut off.

At least for a boy, the reason is either as a mark or for supposed health reasons. For a girl there's only one reason - to make sure that she never enjoys sex. Which a) is a ridiculous reason and b) doesn't work all the time. (Moe never heard of Dr. Gräfenberg.)
