Title: Ant Man
Post by: SGOS on July 10, 2015, 08:00:07 AM
I would think that Hollywood is scraping the bottom of the superhero barrel.  Yes, Ant Man was a real Marvel Character, but he never rose to the status of Spiderman.  In addition, the superhero movies that hired other comedian actors have been less than stellar box office bonanzas.  Well, actually, I can only think of one, the Green Lantern.  The coming attractions don't even look that good.  But will I pass on this one?  Not on your life!  I'll be waiting at the theater for it to arrive.

There is a history with shrinking super heroes that goes all the way back to the golden age. I'm not sure why. You'd think becoming really small would be a disadvantage, even with the proportional strength and shit.

Yeah. If some tiny person were to hit someone in the face with the strength of a full sized person, the kilogram-force per square centimeter would probably cause a major perforation.

Even if we ignore the physics issues with shrinking, it still seems like a pretty crappy superpower.  It has pretty limited utility:

1) Infiltration
2) Escape
3) Attacking a villain through a chink in his/her armor
4) Fantastic Voyage-esqe surgery or possibly, bomb defusal.

It goes without saying that none of this is particularly exciting to watch.  It has a very old and tired feel to it.

Granted, fisticuffs and energy projection isn't necessarily all that interesting, either.  But you can put some new spin on that stuff to keep it interesting (Hulk superstrength compared to Thor superstrength, Cyclops energy projection compared to Gambit energy projection) it's pretty hard to do that with shrinking.  Ant Man has ant allies, and that's cool, but aside from getting a lift, it doesn't seem like the ants really do all that much much for Pym.

I thought the same thing.

When I was a little kid, I loved the Avengers comic-book. I liked Ant-Man mostly because he also became Giant-Man! Later he became Goliath, and Yellowjacket (my favorite).
