A mother in Florida used the Pizza Hut smartphone app to call for help while her and her three children were held hostage at knifepoint. Alongside her order of a pepperoni pizza, Cheryl Treadway included special instructions to call 911.
Treadway’s boyfriend, Ethan Nickerson, reportedly held her hostage while he sharpened a large knife after the couple had been arguing all day. Knowing she wouldn’t be able to use the phone to make a call or send a message, Treadway convinced Nickerson to let her order a pizza instead.
With her order, Treadway included a message that read, “Please help. Get 911 to me.â€
Staff at the local Pizza Hut knew Treadway, a frequent customer, and called the local authorities immediately. Deputies were able to escort Treadway and one of her children out of the property, while Nickerson emerged 20 minutes later. The other children were unharmed.
“I don’t know if I ever would have thought of it. I mean it’s just something that she did so naturally,†Lt. Curtis Ludden told a local news station. “The boyfriend never knew about it until he saw us coming around the corner.â€
Nickerson was “charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, battery, false imprisonment and obstructing justice by depriving communication to law enforcement,†CNN reports. He is now in jail with a bail set at $45,000, and will appear in court on June 1.
