Title: DEFLATEGATE ?????????????

Holy shitsky and boy howdy, boys and girls. I can approach this because my team the Packers (sob) are now in the dust of playoff ruin. But when the SCIENCE OF DEFLATED FOOTBALLS COMES INTO THE PICTURE, I think we need to scrutinize this puppy. When NOT ONE, BUT SEVERAL footballs are found to be under inflated the vigilantes got to come out, ese. Excuses? Faulty pressure gauge? I think not! Tampering? Gasp! NOOOOOOO.......!

Bill Nye is apparently a Seahawks fan, so this article is tainted. but nonetheless, a cloud now hangs over the Patriots and their stellar, never known to cheat (did I say that?) coach, the honorable (cough) Bill Belichik. what can I say? Let the vigilantes ride......... :naughty:

Ok, I've heard a bit about this on the radio. As a non-sports watcher, I have to admit I'm not sure why this matters. Its seems obvious the loss pressure was intentional, given the 7 of 9 balls that had about the same pressure. What I don't get is where anyone would gain from this. Both sides use the same ball, right? If there's some disadvantage, wouldn't it work both ways?

In any case Stromboli, seriously, its a game. That level of punctuation and capital letters leads me to think you're taking it way too seriously.

No, I'm just joking because at least one person on the forum is a Patriots fan.

No, I'm just joking because at least one person on the forum is a Patriots fan.

Fine….
1) Pats QB played FAR better in the second half with the "corrected" balls than in the first half with the "improper" footballs..so…what advantage was there? Did Brady cheat to give the Colts a "sporting" chance?
2) Numerous players, coaches and sportsreporters both past and present actually laughed that this was an issue.
3) Numerous players both past and present actually claim this is an advantage, (though one has to admit the evidence proves otherwise)
4)Numerous players, coaches, players and sportswriters claim this is only newsworthy simply because it is the Pats, this seems somewhat important that those clamoring for the heads of the organization also freely admit that if this was someone else, this would not be an issue.
5) Yes I am pissed off about it and the implications if indeed anyone from the Pats organization did indeed tamper with the footballs after they were approved, however, I admit a certain fondness for the use of science of gas if it turns out they used a gas other than natural "air" (which is not specifically  demanded by the rules) that may have more reaction to temperature than normal "air".
6)The fine for f-ing with the ball after the officials certify it is 25 grand, the fine for grabbing your crotch during a game is 20 grand. So the NFL has established the penalty for the action. It is 5 grand more than grabbing your crotch. Must be an important rule that really affects the game eh?

The primary advantage is gained from the grip of both throwing, and catching a softer ball. On a cold day, this advantage is multiplied. Not sure by what to multiply, only that it is a greater advantage on a cold day than a warm one. From the primary advantage we move on to the secondary advantage of momentum. Momentum gained from throwing and completing passes early on with softer balls. Luck didn't throw the ball nearly as well, and therefore wasn't able to establish momentum, much needed momentum required to win an NFL playoff game. Those that say the game wasn't close enough for deflate gate to be an issue, I produce momentum as the greatest advantage gained from throwing and catching deflated balls.

I've caught balls from stronger throwing arms than Brady, a softer ball is so much easier to catch.

First of all I'm not a Patriots fan.  I'm a Vikings fan.  No jokes please.  I would bet that every team plays games with the inflation of the footballs.  The Pats just happened to get caught because no one can stand Brady and Belicheck.  It also doesn't help that they got busted for Spygate a few years back.  Fine them, take a draft pick away or whatever.  Just move on.

Don't they have officials on the field to prevent this kind of tampering?

(and every team cheats)

You never know. Maybe the officials enjoy handling soft balls themselves.

Brady and Bellicheck or however it's spelled have been cheating for years, but nobody cares so it's a non issue.. The main thing is the Bengals were one and done 4 years straight and the BUCKEYES won the college national championship. Case closed.

Makes you wonder how many other teams used this in the past. I'd heard some commentators say that this is the reason the Patriots have such a low fumble rate, but I think that's more due to them not having an AP-esque RB, so whoever fumbles goes on the shit-list for a few weeks.

And Neil D. Tyson weighs in............

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/26/neil-degrasse-tyson-defla_n_6551666.html

QuoteNeil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History and all-around scientific badass, said on Monday that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is full of hot air when it comes to Deflategate.

Belichick claimed “atmospheric conditions” may have caused balls to lose air pressure during his team's AFC Championship win over the Indianapolis Colts on Jan. 18.

But Tyson deflated that theory with a single tweet:

Also on Monday, the NFL's official football manufacturer said Belichick's explanation didn't fly.

“That’s BS," Wilson representative Jim Jenkins told Boston.com. "That’s BS, man.”

Jenkins told the website that different environments might cause the PSI inside the ball to change, but "maybe in a year or two." To cause the pressure to change more quickly, Jenkins suggested a ball would have to be placed in a freezer, then thawed.

Tyson and Jenkins aren't alone in dismissing Belichick. Last week, Bill Nye "The Science Guy" poked holes in another explanation floated by Belichick, that the balls could become deflated when they were rubbed before the game.

“Rubbing the football -- I don’t think you can change the pressure,” Nye said. “To really change the pressure, you need one of these, the inflation needle.”

However, four Boston-area scientists told the Boston Globe that temperature changes will cause a football to lose air pressure.

“Based on simple ideal-gas-law calculations, I would not be surprised if the Patriots are vindicated," James Bird, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Boston University, told the newspaper. "That said, there are many unknowns that can make small differences."

ESPN reported last week that 11 of 12 Patriots footballs fell 2 pounds short of NFL standards for inflation, which require between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch.

Under-inflated footballs are easier to catch, especially in the wet weather during the AFC title game.

All of the footballs used by the Colts met league standards.

On Monday, the Patriots reportedly turned over a surveillance video to the NFL that allegedly shows a locker room attendant taking two bags of balls into a bathroom.

O lordy mama I'm having fun with this.

If I'm right, according to this calculator,  the ball would have had to been inflated at a really high temperature and then taken out somewhere very cold. (http://www.chemicool.com/idealgas.html)

Anyone know how warm the pitch was?

I think we are going to find out that the balls were never inflated that high. Brady doesn't care, he picks the ones he wants they submit them to be tested and the ones that flunk get tossed, however, I don't think the refs weighed them and I think the Pats have it on tape. I don't think the refs weigh the balls or at least some of the refs don't. This may be why the NFL is dragging its feet, Belichick is fucking them for the fucking they gave him 10 years ago. The balls were never tampered with after the refs marked them because they didn't have to be. Or not.

NO! Both teams use their own set of balls on offense.

It matters because it's a major advantage. It's the championship game, with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake in the Superbowl. Not to mention the prestige of being best in the AFC.

I used to be a non-sports person as well, but I still understood that when someone cheats - they forfeit, whatever game it is. I guess in football it doesn't work that way. There's just a fine and some other impotent penalties.

The way I see it, the Colts may not have won anyway, but the Patriots shouldn't get to go to the Superbowl by cheating. I'd rather award it to the ones who got cheated, even though they may not be the better team.

yeah, its kinda silly to ban a team from the Super Bowl based on supposition and conjecture, but some people react that way.
