Alright gents, here's the storyline, make it as you will.
You have been summoned by General Tikachi, the head of the Special Operations Battalion (SOC) When you reach the debriefing room you realize that you are not alone, three other men are there, occupying several of the chairs in the room. There seems to be one chair per person, with a further two laying empty besides the rest.
You take your place alongside the other men and turn your respective gazes to the General, after examining one another of course. After all, the majority of faces present are not ones that you recognize.
Tikachi speaks "Gentlemen, I have gathered you here for a reason, and that reason is I'm putting together a new Unit, one that will be made up of you and a few others, once they arrive I'll officially tell you what you'll be doing."
(Now would be the time to ask minor questions and or describe yourself, physically. Any personal ticks and the like would be mentioned if applicable)
I've killed everyone in the room, seized power and now rule all with my iron fist.. Sorry guys.. I'm just power hungry that way. :think:
After the General spoke, Desmond Nova looked around the briefing room. He had no idea why he was there, but when General Tikachi requests your presence you don't ask why. The "old man" was a fucking legend. There were three other men there, scattered in chairs around the massive oak table. Des recognized no one. He rubbed his shaved head and looked at the other men. They all had the same empty look. None of them knew what was going on either.
Des fidgeted in his chair. His six foot four frame wasn't accustomed to briefing room amenities. He had a million questions, but knew better to ask. Just sit tight and wait for the show. This was a SOC operation. You don't rock the boat by asking a bunch of dumb-ass questions. He had learned a lot since Kardorra. Keep you nose clean, do your job, and don't think you can raise your station in life by fucking the local debutantes.
(Will wait until everyone has had a chance to reply before moving forward)
Adam Cairn sat motionless in his chair, eyes fixed on the general, awaiting orders. For now he ignored the others, even as they stared at eachother and at him, clearly trying to get grip on what kind of people they were being grouped with. He'd decided that if they were important, the general would soon explain. Besides if the four of them were going to work together, it wouldn't be hard for them to better men than those in his last squad. And he trusted the general's judgement enough to be certain they would reliable. Rank, names, specialities and such would be given soon, he thought, and that was all that mattered. So he kept his mouth shut and his eyes on the general, he was not here to make friends.
From the corner of his eyes he realized that once in a while the others eyed the long, thick scartissue above his left ear. It was nothing new, he'd been used to the attention the thick straight line drew for a few months now. Without his helmet it showed clearly in contrast to his short black hair and his pale skin. He realised it was an ugly thing, but it did not impair this 1.75 meter soldier's abilities to run and react on the battlefield so it was of no concern. He'd worked hard to regain the strength he'd had before the incident in the Savalta jungle on Corus' moon which had resulted in his three month long recovery and the aforementioned scar. His ability to bounce back to that level had been the only reason why he'd survived the four months on planet Sera-47, his last, failed assignment. Apart from the minor inconvenience that he couldn't raise his left eyebrow, it was nothing more now than a reminder of someone he didn't know he wanted to remember or not.
Several minutes pass, not a word is spoken in the room. Tikachi doesn't look uncomfortable in the slightest with the silence, he merely waits for the last two members to arrive, he looks at each of you in turn. As his gaze meets yours you get the feeling that this man understand you, despite your never have talked to him. The man's eyes seem to read you in seconds, it is both disturbing and strangely comforting.
The sounds of two men talking in the hallway reach your ears, the last two men are arriving
Tikachi looks to Nova. "Your chair not fitting you soldier? You're fidgeting more than a teenager getting ready for the big date"
*practically unnoticed Dez slides into the room near some empty seats and eyes the fresh meat*
Lookit the jarheads the ol' General stuck me with. Wiped my boots with better crap than this lot. The big one looks tough, not that it'd matter. Big or small, everyone's the same on their back.

But I aint complaining. 'Fact, I'm positively delighted. Finally, some more action. Been cooped up too long. Far too long.
I'll play the good soldier boy for now, jump through the hoops, and play their game, because down on the planetside, it's different. It's all different. The whole charade of civilization just vanishes and it's just you and the enemy. Glorious simplicity. I'll make them burn. I'll make them all burn. Just like...like... *grimaces*
*with practiced ease, Dez slides his lean but muscular frame into the nearest seat and beams at his comrades with an overly friendly smile*
*Steve French's (that's me) chair breaks, waking him from his un-planned nap* and then I say:
"Oh shit. Sorry. I had a long night and I'm recovering from a cold. Who loosened the screws on my chair??? *glares at Nova....*
Anyway, what are we doing?"
*Dez snickers loudly and derisively*
"That, soldier is about to be answered." tikachi answers, ignoring Dez's laugh
The last two men finally arrive, chatting amiably. One is a tall man, though nowhere near as tall as Nova. His hair is cut short but not so short as to be considered a buzz cut. He has a tattoo across is right cheek, it is of a long serpent, whose golden eyes almost seem to stare out form the skin. He has Gray eyes and is smiling.
The other man is shorter, he has black hair that has grown out, just a bit. His Amber eyes are a rarity in this day an age, and it is surprising to see them. What is most striking about this individual however is the long scar he has on his face, going from his left ear to the base of his throat. In addition, his left arm is gone, having been replaced by a prosthetic limb, that looks almost like a normal arm save for the fact that it is jet black. Evidently something nearly killed this man in the past, and he does not seem to care about he aesthetic damage it has caused.
"First Lieutenant Glen A. Barkins reporting sir" the tall one barks
"Specialist Renault G. Messier reporting sir" The scarred man says, saluting."
"Good for you to finally arrive" Tikachi says, with a touch of reproach. "Men, you're looking at the newest Squad in the SOC Battalion. Squad 382, codename "Theta Squad"
"I suggest you introduce yourselves and state your respective roles now." the old man murmurs.
Theta Sir! Salutes. Ghost patrol Captain, N7 Trained in biotics and snipers sir. Mission: Top Secret, for your eyes only.
*salutes*
“Gunnery-Sergeant Cairn, sir. Special forces; ‘F.A.S.T.'-division. Weapon of choice: ‘K-13’, combat shotgun.â€

"These missions will not be easy, but you have not been chosen because of your ability to accomplish easy tasks, you hve been chosen for your skills and for your raw potential."
Tikachi looks you square in the eye "make no mistake, if you screw up in the field or decide to wage your own private campaign, you will get yourself and the rest of your squad killed"
Tikachi gazes at des pointedly for a few moments before finishing. "If any of you have any problems with obeying orders or killing, whether enemies or potentially civilians, leave this room immediately"

Tikachi smirks as if a joke had been made
"His base is located on the smallest Continent, in the jungle. You're going to find a way to siphon off as much data as you can and bring it back to us. You'll have to fight past an army of mercs, but I have confidence in your abilities to succeed."

You are know Squad 382, Squad Theta, for better or for worse your life is now irrevocably tied to the lives of the men around you. You have some time available, how you choose to use it is your decision, but the thought of the upcoming mission will weigh on your mind, for some of you it might be the first real taste of combat, for others, its just another mission on some backwater world.
The first of many missions, should you be successful, the time to prove yourselves is coming very soon.

Suffice it to say, the backstory is usually given by the DM (Dungeon Master, AKA GM (Game Master) or GR (Game Runner)) for each player's character, to give them some story to launch themselves from, instead of just being thrown into the game. >

<Anyway, Pickel, a backstory like I said is a springboard used to start up the character, Usually the DM decides the backstory, but in this particular one, because it is brand new I gave a bit of leeway to the players, some of whom added their own kinks to the story, which is fine.
But all should note that in the future they won't have as much control over their backstories, given that this is a new story and that I was impressed by the effort that was put in, I allowed some extra stuff to take place. In the future, I will directly make the backstories and the players will just roll with it.
If you want suggestions on RPing in general I could just say roll with it, write an essay if you want, but just act how you think your character could act. As you get more experience you start adding small touches like little things your character does (Rubbing a scar absentmindedly for instance) It all depends on you. I even had a guy whose face had been burnt up by a mage, so he wore a mask to cover it all up.

<For further reference, there are four of you left in the room, however, the two NPC's leave. For combat information, one is the squad Medic, and the other is a rifleman.
You also have a choice when it comes to squad leader, proper military protocol would have the highest rank/most experienced individual in command, but I will allow you guys to "elect" a leader if you will, should you decide upon it. If not I could always delegate it to an NPC but I'd rather not, I want you guys to play and find out for yourselves ya know. >

You are on the vessel, preparing to move out, it will be a time before you can reach your destination obviously, so you begin to train amongst yourselves, things seem to be going well, but still there is something that makes you feel uncomfortable. The ship is a new design, so it is pretty enough, yet the bright lights in some area bother you, they're almost too piercing.
An at other times, the lights are too dim, and the walls play tricks on you, they seem to...come at you at times, its only a figment of your imagination, it must be. Still, the walls do seem to press down upon you, the corners are so rough that they cut right through you if you bump them, and things seem so cramped that you feel like you're being boxed in.
The weirdest thing is that no-one else seems to be bothered by these things, though you hear the occasional crewman talk about nightmares and the like, and very rarely, you might see one shiver for no reason.
Things continue to feel uncomfortable after Adam falls and breaks his leg, he was a trained soldier, there's no way he would just fall down the stairs like that, and one person who witnessed it said he gave no effort to stop his fall, he just...fell, could he have possible thrown himself?
All three of you feel these thoughts, it is up to you whether you want to share them, or keep them to yourselves. After all, it could just be nerves about the coming mission, couldn't it?
