New thread for some FOOTBALL!!!!  =D>

In Combine news, Te'o fucking sucks.

And in agent news, Oakland DT Desmond Bryant has the best mugshot ever.

I actually a long time ago at the old RFK statum sat two rows in front of his box when they played the Skins. We beat them that time.

Since 91 over all the Giants have done on average much better.

I saw Earl Campbell play.  I can't remember another running back who terrified me more.  If he got his legs going and three yards in front of him to get up steam, wasn't nobody bringing him down.

He's actually very good, and one of the more underrated QBs in the NFL today, even after winning a Super Bowl.

But is he $120 million good? No, I don't think so. It's very likely that this is his prime, and by his 4th or 5th year of his contract Baltimore will wish they didn't spend that kind of money on him.

Tebows short time in the NFL did come with setting a record.  I DO NOT LIKE TEBOW.  But I am so glad he kicked Rohtblierrsgers ass with the shortest overtime ever in NFL playoff game.  I think it was 7 seconds, touchdown Denver to continue in playoffs.  RBurger, out.  Loved it.  Then they fired him and picked up Manning.  Love that even better.  Do I love that he kicked Flacco's ass....not really, bc he is my 2nd favorite.

I got 1.50 out of Kenny Britt, 4.00 out of Travon Austin and 2.30 out of Lance Moore, who was a last minute replacement for Jared Cooke who would have gotten me 24.1 points. I'm almost 27 points ahead with Arian Foster, RGIII and the Texans D (none of whom are as healthy as I'd like) left to play, while my opponent has LeSean McCoy and Andre Johnson. If Matt Schaub out preforms RGIII while sitting on my bench I'm going to scream.

It is my first year playing fantasy football and so far I'm still holding to my position that it is silly and bad for football (although it apparently increases NFL revenues). I decided to play this year largely to challenge that pre-held belief of mine.

Alright, time for me to drone on and on about the Bengals.. If Dalton can learn to not throw the ball over everyones heads they're gonna be really good.
AJ, Eifert, Gresham, Marvin Jones, Bernard, Sanu and the Law Firm.. then the D with Geno Adkins, etc..
Ok, just wait n see. All these long years of suffering finally over! :)

Hmm..ought to be a slugfest today in Cincy between Bengals and the Packers. As much as I hate to say it I have to give the edge to the Pack because of their offense and Bengals db's are banged up pretty bad.
On the other hand so are Greenbay's db's and Starks isn't running roughshod over Geno Adkins and company. This defense ain't the deadskins..
Still, Dalton aint Rogers and they don't have quite the receivers Greenbay has. Ought to be good though. :)

Bengals spotted 14 then go behind 30-14 with 4 consecutive turnovers in 1st half and win 34-30 BEATING Aaron Rogers and the Pack.
Offense caughed it up 4 times in a row, fg, fg, td, fg. Rogers threw 1 td pass.
I am pleased and the big talk here is Cleveland beat the Vikings.. go figure..

My neighbor is about the biggest Cowboy fan around here in the Dallas 'burbs. His game room is nothing more than a 100" projection screen Dallas Cowboy game viewing room.
He does nothing but apologize and make excuses for the Cowboys & Romo.
Now if I had to choose a team I would root for my local franchise, but it is hard given that Jerry "build me a stadium with YOUR money" Jones is the owner & Tony "self-entitled, I'll throw a game losing interception at the last minute" Romo is the quarterback.
The problem with my friend and neighbor is that he cares nothing about integrity or the actual game. He could careless if a player was a child molestor if that player would win a game. That is a big problem for me.
Every weekend the Cowboy's play and I hear from my friend how the ref's screwed up, or how we would have won if only we had that player that maybe going to jail and various scenerios like that. My neighbor loves Romo and Jones. He continually cites Romo's overall stats claiming him to be one of the best quarterbacks in history. I don't think Romo has a brain cell in his body. My neighbor praises Jones stating that he brought several championships here. Well Jones is one of the most corrupt criminal busnessmen I have ever witnessed. He's kinda like Dick Chaney if Chaney owned a NFL team.
It's hard rooting for the Cowboys. You want them to win, but you also want them to be a shining example of integrity. They do the first thing about 50% of the time and they are nowhere near the second. The only thing worse is the Oklahoma Sooners and their fans.
My other neighbor (Tea-Party Todd) is an Oklahoma Sooners fan. He is the most irritating obnoxious being in the world. He continously sings "Boomer Sooner" and spouts "Crimson and Cream." I have explained over and over that "Boomer Sooner" is nothing more than Yale's fight song "Boola Boola" and Crimson and Cream are the colors of Harvard, but he just won't listen. He actually said that Oklahoma had the colors and the song before Harvard and Yale ever existed.
So "Deep in the Heart of Texas" I suffer the ineptitude and lack of integrity that is the Dallas Cowboys, and the obnoxious stupidity that is the Oklahoma Sooners.
Come on NBA season, hurry up and get here!!!!!!!

Funny you mention that mykcob. I lived in both Irving and Arlington not far from the old and new stadiums.. Remember the entire apartment complexes 'Jerry' had bulldozed to build parking space? I had friends who lived in those apartments. They were given one week notice to move before they were tossed out on the streets..
THAT'S his team.. Real winners, huh?
Truly I say, the only thing that matters is the Bengals beat the Pattycakes and Brady will remember Geno Adkins for a long time.. :)

A.P.'s 2 year old son was killed by his mother's boyfriend.   :(

QuoteAdrian Peterson's son dies; alleged attacker in jail

One of Adrian Peterson's sons passed away Friday. The 2-year-old died of injuries from an aggravated assault Wednesday, Sioux Falls police confirmed to NFL Media.

The accused attacker, Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant in Sioux Falls, S.D., police spokesman Sam Clemens said. Patterson was in a relationship with the child's mother at the time, Clemens said.

In light of the boy's death, the charges against Patterson will be reviewed and additional changes might be added. Patterson is being held in the Minnehaha County Jail on $750,000 cash bond.

Clemens told NFL Media earlier Friday that the child was in critical condition after sustaining head injuries that appeared to be consistent with abuse. Police did not name the boy, but Peterson and his father, Nelson, both spoke Friday about the terrible situation.

"Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support," Peterson wrote on Twitter. "The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. God Bless everyone and thank u so much."

Peterson missed practice Thursday, but the running back returned to the Minnesota Vikings' facility Friday. He indicated to the media that he planned to play in Sunday's game. Peterson's comments to the media came before news of his son's passing became public.

"I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans (and) the Vikings organization," Peterson said Friday afternoon. "This is a private matter, and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand. Thanks."

The news is absolutely heartbreaking. We send our condolences to Peterson and his family at this unimaginable time.

As a Buccaneers fan, you can have him!  Good riddance.  Crazy year...  KC is the only undefeated team now!  I wonder how SF feels about dumping Alex Smith?

Am I the only one that doesn't see the SeaHawks "magic"?  They are good, but I don't see them in the superbowl.  The Colts, look amazing.  The dominated the Broncos, and Luck is getting better every week.

KC has been a good team in the making for a few years now, but didn't have a good head coach or QB. The playoffs are going to be interesting. I'm thinking the AFC will have KC, Cincy, NE and Indy.. Denver and KC will have to slug it out for a wild card, maybe NY and NE too.
I'm not sure about the NFC, but Detroit will likely be in, Seattle, Dallas, NO, GB??
I have to go with the Bengals.. I'm ready to celebrate.. Hell, I've been ready for 44 years..

Dude, I am hot air even when I am debating religion. I am serious about the play calling, but I am not on a Jihad.

I wish religion could be treated as the same type of trash talk as friends in sports. Call them like you see them, and when you suck you suck, but at the end of the day, everyone goes to bed at night.

All my friends at work build RG up last year, and I do have to admit, in all the years since 92 I have had my hopes built up and dashed. But last year I thought we'd build this year upon it, but it looks ultimately like more of the same.

I really take a skeptics approach, I'll believe it when I see it. I want my Skins to do well, but I am not going to stick my head in the sand and wish.

You can have a great QB, but they have to keep him off the ground so it really begins with the O line and pass blocking. The qb doesn't last long doubling as a running back.. I'd blame team owners and coaching. Shanahan's an egomaniac.. so is Snyder for that matter.

Yeah, when they're beat in every phase of the game it exposes weaknesses and gives em at least a chance to learn as opposed to Dallas and 'Dez' who won't learn squat..

I live in Dallas. I am actually a Cowboy fan....somewhat. The recent game against Detroit was an eye opener to say the least. It showed me just how racist Cowboy fans really are.
Dez Bryant was upset. Maybe for personnal reasons maybe not. He is the best offensive weapon on the team and he got a total of 5 balls thrown his way. He scored on 2 of them.
Romo can't check down. He can't read defenses. He waste time letting the clock run down because he is an utter moron. My neighbors blamed the loss on Dez Bryant saying he was a typical selfish nigger ranting on the sideline. The fact is that Bryant and maybe ONLY Bryant was aware of what was happening. He had single coverage nearly the whole game yet Romo hardly threw him the ball.
Jerry Jones and family, Jason Garrett and Roma should be dumped for real football people.
You know the NFL lockout? Jerry Jones started that.
You know the NFL Refs strike? Jerry Jones started that.
Do you know what it cost just to park at a Cowboy game? Minimum $75.00!
You think that stadium is cool, well try watching a game there. That scoreboard is a major distraction. Prices for everything are astronomical. Oh yes Mrs. Jerry Jones (Stepford wife) thinks that the stadium is a world class art museum. What a crock. She spent 42 million on a big mirror in front of the stadium.
The fact is that Jones didn't pay for the stadium. He held Arlington taxpayers ransom to build his stadium and displace low income families. He doesn't pay a cent of taxes on that stadium or the income from that stadium.
I say let the IRS arrest Jerry Jones, try him, convict him on fraud and tax evassion, and put him away for life.
Dez Bryant was right to be mad and to hold Tony Romo accountible.
Title: Re: NFL Discussion Thread
Post by: AllPurposeAtheist on October 29, 2013, 06:57:27 PM
Bryant went ballistic, but in front of the national audience wasn't the place to do it. Garret was a fool for letting him do it.
I agree Romo goes blank at times, but other times plays great. He's definitely overrated.
As far as that monstrosity of a stadium and others I agree. The NFL is a publicly funded game and the beneficiaries are team owners and players while the average fan cannot attend games much less pay for parking so in effect all of society is subsidizing others pastimes and the fortunes of others.
You're right about the stadium displacing low income citizens. I used to pick up scrap metal in the area and know as fact several low income apartment complexes were leveled and the people living there were booted out with almost no notice.

I'd say the Cowboy's problems have less to do with Romo/Bryant and more to do with Jones. The Cowboys, a perennial middle of the pack teams as far as performance goes, is set to be $31 Million over the salary cap next year; How? Jerry Jones, personnel man. I am disappointed that so many people/NFLers are saying Martin should have just punched Incognito and moved on, but I am appalled that people are defending Incognito's actions. It would be one thing if what he had done was "just" "normal" hazing--personally I don't get hazing; I keep hearing that it bonds a team together, but it seems that it would bond the guys dishing it out and alienate the ones receiving it, who are typically the new guys/rookies, the very people who most need bonded to the team by virtue of being new--but as soon as it crossed the line into leaving voice-mail(s) with racial slurs, threats of violence against a family member and especially a death threat, then I don't see how anyone defending Incognito's actions is doing anything but wallowing in his scum.

It is one thing to defend Incognito by saying "maybe he didn't do it; let the facts come out", it is another entirely to defend his (alleged) actions and say "Martin should have just maned-up and it is Martin's fault for being a soft target".

For sure, hazing is bullying and bullying is not beneficial for anyone - except maybe the bullier feels some twisted gratification. Hazing/bullying should never be "officially" sanctioned or turned a blind eye toward by those with the authority to do something to stop it.

I will say, though that when I was a junior on my high school basketball team some seniors were bullying most of the underclassmen on the team and when I told the coach about it he basically shrugged like no big deal and didn't do anything. Later in the season during the warmup before practice (before the coaches came out), one of those seniors decided it would be big chuckles to do a layup over the top of me (their bullying toward me had been only verbal up to that point). My fist literally came up off the floor in a beautiful arc right into his jaw. There was a lot of blood. He wasn't badly hurt, though. The coach called us into his office to grill us on what happened. I just said I was done with basketball and quit (the other kid claimed I had started it). A few days later the coach talked to me again and apologized, but I was done with basketball for good. Here's the part that is really sad - after punching that senior, nobody messed with me anymore at school or anywhere for that matter for the whole rest of the time I was in high school. I say that is sad because it shouldn't take smashing somebody in the face to get them to stop bullying. Unfortunately or fortunately standing up to bullies oftentimes works, though, so if someone is in a position where they are being bullied and those in authority who should stop it, don't stop it, then there are times when I would recommend standing up for yourself. I'm a pacifist about organized societal violence (like wars), but I don't have a problem with someone protecting themselves with a little violence rather than put up with bullying that they shouldn't have to put up with because the people in authority are not stopping it.

I'm a football fan and the hazing makes zero sense to me. Plenty of great athletes drop out over it merely because they dont have the personality for it and are repulsed as many of us are at the dumb fuckhead jock mentality. I knew a guy years ago who easily could have been a world class sprinter. He could run faster, laughing at people backwards than fast guys could run forward, but he had a very low key personality that couldn't tolerate the bullshit so he never entered track and field.
I'd much rather my team lose every event than have bullies and assholes leading to hollow victories.

The truth often overlooked is at the end of the day football is nothing but entertainment. Nobody loses their lives over a game and people aren't held in POW camps. This isn't a matter of national security and a peoples way of life. These guys to an extent are paid to represent a segment of a city's pride, but nothing more and like it or not Incognito has hurt Miami's image far worse than had they lost every game as a result of Martin being perceived as weak.
The blame is being attempted to be shifted to Martin, but anyone in their right mind has to know better..

But this year, it's a showdown between the Seahawks and the Broncos.

Second pick is the 49ers vs. Pats

Cuz the fucking Patriots always make it to the fucking superbowl.

Quote from: "Agramon"Anyone a believer in the Chiefs? Their 2 games with Denver will be the real indicators I think.
Obviously all they needed to do was beat the teams that lined up against them, but what is it now, 5 teams in a row playing backup QBs, and not very impressive wins against some of them at that. If they can catch a few breaks they could beat Denver, but I don't think they are the better team. They should hope for wind and rain--except that their run defense hasn't been great.

They were never as bad as their record last year --they had some major pieces injured. I'd argue that getting health has been closer to half of their success, with Smith and Reid as the other half.

Post by: hrdlr110 on November 09, 2013, 06:49:34 PM
The Seahawks have been winning, but not overpowering of late. They will go well as long as Wilson stays healthy. They have won games late on account of defences getting tired from chasing Wilson.
You can't fault teams for building their offense around a talented qb, but your backup qb needs to have a similar style game to compliment the surrounding talent just in case of an injury. It's rare that an athletic qb will go the season without missing games.
I'm loving watching the broncos - and the cleverest qb to ever play the game in my opinion. I still love the colts because I think they have the best uniforms in the entire league, but man I love watching Peyton. Anybody have a favourite uniform that maybe isn't just because it's  their favourite team? As for the colts, I love the simplicity, hope they don't change the helmet like many have!

Yeah, I do like the redskins helmet as well. Reminds me of my childhood - I had nfl sheets on my bed. And, I'm 1/16th American Indian. (I don't want a name change by the way) Any team that hasn't changed their helmet, I like for nostalgia reasons alone. Patriots were cool, then they changed. Bengals are maybe the only one that changed for the better. Even that took a while to accept. The teams do try to keep older fans happy with throwback uniforms on occasion, but they go too far back I think - most of those fans are long gone or are in nursing homes.

I only vaguely remember the R with the headdress, that is very close to the time I first took an interest in the game. Then came the side view of a warrior with the similar headdress. I hadn't realized the number of changes until I looked it it up. I wonder how many other teams have made these subtle changes that have been difficult to notice???

I think that the NFL is so diluted that there is no clear cut team that is superior to most of the others.
Title: Re: NFL Discussion Thread
Post by: hrdlr110 on November 09, 2013, 09:07:19 PM
Diluted??? Not sure I'd go there. The current parity in the league stems from a combination of things. Technology, shared ideas - hard to keep secrets with the constant coaching changes, and more than anything else, free-agency. I was in camp with the chargers in 1986 made it to second cut. The athleticism of players today is scary. I wouldn't even get a look today with my talent level of the time - as much as I'd like to think otherwise. I caught the ball better than many, but just couldn't get separation from cat quick corners. No, it's not diluted, its just hard to beat teams that have access to everything equally, and most things, given the age of the league, have been done before, so adjustments happen more rapidly. That's why I like Peyton manning so much, his adjustments occur at the line of scrimmage, just before the snap!

Woohoo.. (obligatory gloating) Bengals win big with defense and special teams. Offense has been horrid for a few weeks and was today for the most part, but they scored 31 in the second quarter with a mere 3 first downs. Two blocked punts, one for a TD by a career practice squad guy, Tony Dye making his NFL debute and another by Vontez Burfict who forced a fumble then scooped it up..
AJ Green only 2 catches for 7 total yards..Browns were leading early 13-0 then the wheels fell off for them and Bengals coasted to win 41-20 thanks to take it to the house defense and special teams..

But on the other hand he could have kicked it farther had it been 80 degrees or with a stiff breeze.

It is possible. Prater has a hell of a leg no doubt.. 80 degrees probably isn't the biggest factor, but low humidity probably would be.
Then again, I'm not a football physicist. :)

QuoteDempsey was born without toes on his right foot and no fingers on his right hand. He wore a modified shoe with a flattened and enlarged toe surface. This generated controversy about whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage. When reporters would ask him if he thought it was unfair, he said "Unfair eh? How 'bout you try kickin' a 63 yard field goal to win it with 2 seconds left an' yer wearin' a square shoe, oh, yeah and no toes either".[3] Additionally, when an analysis of his kick was carried out by ESPN Sport Science, it was found that his modified shoe offered him no advantage - the smaller contact area could in fact have increased the margin of error.[4] In 1977, the NFL added a rule, informally known as the "Tom Dempsey Rule," that "any shoe that is worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe."[5][6]

The long standing debate was whether Dempsey's toeless foot and square shoe gave him an unfair advantage. No question a football in cold weather would have different characteristics than in warm weather. Whether it is an advantage or disadvantage, I'll leave that to the physicists on here.

Well.... the Packers are barely hanging on. Personally I think they should let the season expire and then work on the draft from a more advantaged position.

Redskins? Foreskins.   :axe

Very few, if any kickers kick with their toes these days. Almost all kick with the instep. They used to call it 'soccer style' kicking.. It's more for accuracy than distance, but they get more force either way with the instep kick.

If the Lions and Bears keep losing the Packers are still in it and Rogers should be returning next week..

The thing that kills me about the kick is the where, not the temperature. In the low air density of "mile high stadium" objects will travel farther because of low resitance and less drag. I'm for a comprehensive research on that advantage and an adjustment accordingly. Say his kick was 64 yards in the air and cleared a 10 foot bar and went between two post ten feet apart, if he had made the same kick at sea level how far would have really gone?
Seems to me that at even a 5% difference because of the physical differences Demsey's kick would have travelled over 66 yards, OR the kick in Milehigh would have only gone just over 60 yards.

The thing is both kickers get the same exact advantage and if it's a divisional game they both have the same exact disadvantage at the other stadium..  I think fairness only goes so far. Physical ability still rules over venue.

There are many weather/atmospheric variables that will determine how far a kicked ball will travel. Unless severe, they most likely won't outweigh contact point to determine success. Contact too low, the ball will sail high and come up way short. Contact too high, well, harder to say, that one is often blocked because it travels to low. Bottom line, they've been kicking field goals in mile high stadium for over 50 years, and more nfl games have been played there than any other stadium. Dempsey kicked his in Detroit or N.O. - can't remember. (I know, google it) Dempsey has had the record for 43 years despite mile high being around for more than 50.

Pretty much this. Dempsey's record stood for 43 years. That's a very long time for anyone to hold an absolute record in anything. The fact that improvements in both training and equipment haven't resulted in a longer kick before now speak volumes as to the kind of achievement it was at the time.

BTW. Three other kickers have kicked 63 yard field goals since Dempsey kicked his. But yesterday was the first time someone had kicked one longer than that.

It was New Orleans before the Superdome. Even though Milehigh has been around for 50 years, no one has even attempted the record. And furthermore air density IS a real factor that is the most significant in all the variables. If you filled a football with helium it would travel much farther. Even the NFL recognizes the REAL fact of drag coefficient which is why they redesigned the shape and size of the ball in the first place.

Quoteno one has even attempted the record.

that is one thing that bugs the hell out of me. So you have the ball last at halftime. You have a time out left and your sitting on the 50 yard line. So call a time out with one second left and let your kicker have a shot. I would make it a rule.

Not true. Jason Elam kicked a 63-yarder that, while officially 63, was longer that Dempsey's 63-yarder. We had a kicker hit one from 65 in a pre-season game against Seattle years ago and our second-string kicker in 1991 (yes, Dan Reeves carried two kickers that year). attempted one of 66 or 67 in 1991 that was long enough but wide right. Janakowski hit one from 63 at Mile Hi as well. There have been a few other attempts here and there around the league, it's just an incredibly hard kick to make.

Only Demsey's attempt (as far as I know) was a game winning attempt though. All the others I've seen have either been at the end of the half or after the game is out of reach and the coach is just giving the kicker a shot at the record.

why make it a rule? What's wrong with a 'hail mary' or even a run? Time won't end time the play is over so if a RB runs it 70 yards you get 6 instead of 3.. You'd rather make em kick?

Man the Cowboys have no heart at all. Lee should retire. Carr should cover something besides receivers, and Jerry Jones needs to scrap everything and start over.
The Boys should have played the whole game like they did the first drive and that is pound the ball on the ground. The line would have played better, it would have kept the Bears offense off the field and given the depleated defense a rest, but NOOOOOOOOO! they had to throw stupid passes that got them nothing but 3 and out over and over again, leaving their defensive sceme exposed to its weakness of being on the field.

Now don't blame that on Jenny Jones. He may have taken it and run with it but it's NFL Films' fault.

"Bob Ryan, now Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, coined this for the Cowboys while preparing and editing the team's 1978 season highlight film. He was quoted as saying:

I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television."

watching peyton is always an exercise in wonder. I watch him put his whole body into a pass and it looks like he is throwing a balloon. I swear I don't know how the ball ever gets to the receiver, and it looks like it is floating along kinda like whoo-de-doo. Chargers did a good job of keeping him off the field, and converted some critical 3rds to do that. Good job SD. But in the end Peyton couldn't convert.

I know Rivers is having a good year, but watching him last night I don't know how he is doing it. His throws, even though they get completed are not where a QB should throw the thing. He throws to his receivers while a defender is between them and it is mere luck that the defender doesn't just reach out and pick em. And fer crying out loud a sideline pass should be over the outside shoulder so the defender can't get it, but throws em inside and.....I just don't know how he keeps getting so lucky.

Yeah, I enjoyed seeing Denver taken down a peg. Rivers is a good quarterback and durable, I don't think he's ever really had the supporting cast he deserves nor the coaching. When a team, year to year, can be something close to competitive but never get there, I put that on the owners. Norv Turner was a good offensive strategist, but never worked as a head coach. Why did they hire him?

You see the continual competitiveness of certain teams like New England, New Orleans and Seattle, you see owners who were smart enough to pick the right coaches and get the right players. Denver now and into the future will also be in that group.
Title: Re: NFL Discussion Thread
Post by: AllPurposeAtheist on December 13, 2013, 01:43:47 PM
It's not always the right HC who turns a team at once, sometimes it takes years and all to often owners want to win now and fire coach after coach never reaching where they need to be and trades, etc., go awry year after year.
The Deadskins a good example and like the Bengals of the 90's they pin all hopes on a handful of players hoping one coach will magically transform losers into winners.
It took Mike Brown quite some time to gain trust in Marvin Lewis and trust of the city, but this is his 11th season and they've rebuilt the team from bottom to top.
If Rivers keeps the same coach awhile and that coach has a free hand to build they might rise to the top, but don't count on it mainly because Rivers is far from his rookie season.
Seattle is a bit different. Pete Carrol had a big time reputation from years of success at USC while conversely Shanahan had success in Denver, but mostly because of having well established players and a QB who toiled years before finding the success he found.
Look at the Browns though.. They don't keep coaches long nor QBs.. Their record shows it too.
So much can be laid directly at the feet of arrogant, rich owners who believe they know more how to run teams than the coaches they hire.. Hello Jerry Jones..

You're probably right on Green Bay, the Niners have dominated them recently. but Lambeau Field in the winter time is no piece of cake for any visitor, and the Niners play most of their games in relatively warm climates. Huffpost is already predicting another Ice Bowl. We shall see.

Sunday afternoon on Fox.

San Francisco is stronger and has more weapons right now. I'm picking the Eagles at home in crappy weather because they are peaking and the Saints suck in bad weather.

I'll pick the Colts because Luck is the better quarterback and Andy Reid just somehow doesn't have the skills to finish a season. If the chiefs win I'll change my opinion.

And go Bengals! They deserve a win.

What weapons exactly do they have more than the Packers? I'd say their only stronger point is defense.

Lacy and Starks have been playing an amazing run game. Gore isn't the only one. Niners have about two WR's that can be highlighted. Pack has Nelson, Cobb, Jones, Boykin, and Quartless. At any rate, on the Wide receivers side Green Bay has more weapons. Also, as far as consistency goes, Rodgers is far more consistent than Colin. We shall see. We shall see.

Saints win. But they've got to face Seattle on the road, and that will be a tougher test than Philly.

Kaepernick is dangerous, and the Packers secondary is suspect. Clay is not playing, last I heard. Cobb is back and Rodgers is QB, so hard to call. Playing in Lambeau is tough. I give the defense to the Niners, which might be the difference in the game. I don't think the Packers will be able to get to Kaepernick. He will have a big game.

I just cant see the 49ers winning if it's as cold as has been hinted. Some pansy San Frans will be too immobile in that type of weather to put up a good fight.

But that is under the assumption the Packers are any good, which I don't know.

wtf man, you have a crystal ball????
Have a look at Seattle opponents on the season. They didn't play many teams with a winning record, and when they did, they lost 2 out of 4 or 5, can't remember. Then to cap off the season, they got beat at home, which will mindfuck that home field stigma they had all season long!!! The Saints may lose, but it won't be a thrashing like the last time, I reckon it will be a very close game.

Deadskins hired Jay Gruden as head coach. He's not likely to hurt them and likely to help RGIII quite a bit. They're gonna need a kickass defensive coordinator though because Gruden was a QB. He did help Dalton to a lot of success except in the playoffs.
Mike Zimmer is rumored to be heading to Minnesota.  He's a kickass DC..
Hue Jackson takes over Grudens spot in Cincinnati as OC.

Okay so my avid football fan neighbor is bugging the crap out of me because I didn't watch the Broncos-Patriots game....I had things to do, mainly work.
He finally convinces me to forgo watching 'Downton Abby' and instead watch the Seahawks-49ers game....big mistake. 1) He hates Pete Carroll and for good reason. he wants the 49ers to win which they didn't (I could care less), and to top it off the refs totally sucked the entire game.
2) I can't stay for the end because I am not going to miss the season 3 premiere of 'Sherlock Holmes in the 21st Century' on PBS.
I like sports and will watch some but I can't handle the hype of the NFL. The games are long and there are far too many commercials that are inane, tell you what to do as instruction not as advice, and or those commercials are just stupid. Why on earth do they portray people as the most moronic fools? Oh I know why because basically the American general public are moronic fools. I'm going to buy a certain beer because a ice adventurer went though hell to bring it to me, or an animated lizard is so damned cute and funny that I need to buy insurance from a certain company.
Well I watched the fucking game and saw one of the most horrific injuries ever recorded on TV. Just great.
I think that the Broncos will win the Superbowl, not because they are the better team, but because for a long time now the networks and the league have been shaping the narrative. If Manning wins(and he is almost guaranteed to do so) it will because the League and the networks think that it will be historic and more entertaining. A storybook ending.

Yeah, pretty accurate. I think a whole lot of our public behavior is shaped by football game commercials. I see the way people act in the commercials where they show fans getting all crazy in the game, I would seriously pound somebody that behaved that way in my house.

I will watch the Superbowl. I will eat Papa Murphy's take and bake pizza and some side dishes. I will flip off every Papa John's commercial while doing so, and hope for some funny or sexy ads. I will hope for an upset victory by Seattle, just so I can watch John Elway throw something in disgust, and see Peyton with that wtf happened? look on his face. That is all.

A. Who is Pete Carroll and B. why does everyone hate him?
Pete Carroll is the head coach of the Seahawks. Everyone hates him because he encourages thuggery in the game, cheap shots, he is a poor loser, and even worse winner.
That injury was terrible. If you witnessed worse in hockey it doesn't detract for the seriousness of that specific injury. I doubt very much that you witnessed a worse injury in soccer.

Ah, okay.

As for the injury, I have seen the shin be shattered in multiple places, ones where the bone pops out of the skin and one to the throat I believe that killed the guy (only seen a highlight of this one, didn't see it live, so if you mean seen live scratch that one). So yeah, I would say those were far worse.

If you mean terrible in that he won't be walking right for a long time, I agree with you. But in terms of "holy shit, that was painful to look at"... nah, I have seen FAR worse. Joint injuries aren't nearly as painful to look at as the shin being turned to jelly.

I don't hate Carroll by reputation.  That's silliness the football media throws around anyway. I've never meet the guy.  If you want to get down to brass tacks ALL football coaches are basically the same way, hit the enemy, demoralize them and defeat them.. It's part of the nonsense narrative.
If you want to watch a nasty football injury look up former Bengal Tim Krumrie from the 80s.. His shin was turned to mush.

My best friend and avid NFL fan invited to watch the game with him. We went to the grocery store for supplies before the game. While checking out he asked me what my prediction was for the game. I said I think that it will be a mess of a game, not cleanly played or officiated, and that I think Seattle will eke out a win. Man was I wrong. My friend said that he thought that Manning would demolish Seattle (he hates Pete Carroll and Richard Sherman). even though my friend is rather short like me, he holds a prejudice against short players like Russell Wilson. I told him that he doesn't know what he is talking about when it comes to athletes that aren't very tall. That they made it to the pros for a reason and their height didn't become an obstacle. Of course during the game my friend saw penalties that weren't called and probably didn't happen. He went into pure racist mode when Richard Sherman was hurt on a play(my friend is a FOX watching conservative). He blamed everybody but Manning for mistakes on the field.
The fact is that Seattle was just better and had a better game plan. They didn't need to blitz because the front four were able to apply pressure to the immobile Manning. Both teams made mistakes but Seattle made fewer and their mistakes were not costly. Denver was exposed for what they are, a purely offensive team who relies on the cerebral Manning to win the game. Seattle was fast aggressive and talented. They stayed in their defensive set not worrying about Manning would call. They knew that they could match up one on one so it just didn't matter.
My friend went into hyper damage control after the game. He said well Seattle won't be very good once those contracts start to mature. I told him that it didn't keep them from winning the Super Bowl this year, but that maybe he is right. Although my friend is pretty knowledgeable about sports, the NFL in particular, he has never played the game. He is a fantasy player who doesn't really understand what it is like to be on the field. He sees everything in statistics and the conservative prejudice that a FOX watcher sees. I played football in high school and I know what it is like and what I experienced can't even compare to the speed talent and power of the pro game. So my friend is profoundly disappointed and I am sad for him but not too sad, and today is just another day and the Super Bowl is now over with. Hurray, now we can get things done!

I was happy for Clinton McDonald. He was drafted in late rounds by the Bengals, but a few years ago when Leon Hall was hurt the Bengals were desperate for a corner so they made a trade to Seattle for another corner. McDonald would've been a starter for the Bengals except he was behind Geno Adkins who the year before lead all interior defensive linemen in sacks so McDonald got to clobber Manning. Oddly enough both Hall and Adkins were hurt again this year.
Anyway...as is usually the case great defense beats the crap out of great offense.

Except for the bizarre decision not to account for Percy Harvin, Denver's defense didn't play too bad when the game was close--forcing two field goals on short fields, bottling up Lynch. After the kick return TD more and more of them joined DRC in deciding that it was simply too much effort to bother tackling.

My favorite non profit is in full swing and nobody talking about the games, just the Ray Rice/washed up running back/wife beater and the cross the NFL is hanging him on all in the name of revenue from female fans..errr I mean domestic violence..
Does anyone seriously buy the NFL gives a rats ass about domestic violence over revenue from female fans? It's a cynical ploy they play and even though they tossed out the tokens of Ray Rice and wear little pink items during games for breast cancer awareness the bottom line is still the bottom line. "Try to not piss off half the US population to much."

Yeah, Allpurpose, you are right.  The bottom line.  Major sports (including college) is all about the bottom line.  It is big business.  Whatever effects the bottom line, then effects the game.  Until the bottom line is impacted, then nothing changes.  For Baltimore, Carolina (Hardy) and San Francisco (McDonald)--and the entire NFL, there are games to be won--that's it.  Nothing else really matters.

I was surprised by the number of women wearing Rice jerseys at the Baltimore game.  I really shouldn't have been I guess.  But why not wear Mr. Rice jerseys, she is the victim, not Rice?  Or maybe worn them inside out---or something.  Once again it seems to me that the perpetrator of a crime gets more consideration than the victim.

You're obviously demonically possessed to remind me of their chokability.. They've been to the playoffs 3 years straight and 3 straight one and done's.. The real pisser is it's usually teams they stomp during the regular season. The measure of success in Cincinnati now is winning A playoff game. How sad is that?
Still though.. They've managed to sign most of their good players to long term deals so the window isn't closing as fast as you might think.

And how does arguably the best defence in the league suddenly look totally lost against an offensive line who the week before couldn't stop a band of crippled girl scouts?

You're a bad man.. Casper should pray for you..

I've long suspected the NFL is corrupted to the core being so many players have criminal histories and being a multi billion dollar enterprise it is a non profit and its tie-ins with illegal gambling and so on...Heck..one of your star players is going to rot in prison awhile and that doesn't even mention the checkered past of the Bengals organization.. Oh well.. Sour grapes and such..

In what world, the Pack were 3.5 favorites. But I have no idea why, when you can't stop them would they go for a field goal when you need to get the ball back with less than 3 min.? WTF? You are the 18? GO FOR IT. You are already dead, go for it. god damn it.

Every analyst I saw or heard from favored the Patriots, one indicating it would be a Patriot blowout. FWIW, I figured they would lose and spent the day out in my shop working on my boat, so I didn't see the game.  :sad2:

I asked that myself. It was 4rd and long (15?) but I think you still have a better chance going for it there (especially with the Patriot's offense) then you would kicking a field goal and still needing either a defensive stop or an onside kick. If you trust your defense to get a stop after a field goal then you should still trust them to get a stop after a failed 4th down attempt.

Yeah, I like Mike Zimmer.  He is by far the best coach we have had for a while.  On a different note, I like the outdoor games at the Gophers' field. I just wish the new stadium was outdoors.  We used to be badass when we played outdoors at Bloomington, with Bud Grant, Tarkenton and the Purple People Eaters.

Bengal fans are ready to move on from Lewis as HC. He did change the culture there, but probably won't get them beyond a 1 and done. A lot of fans want him as GM, but that's never going to happen because the Brown family are control freaks.. Even Paul Brown was.. Mike Brown is great with the money, but hangs onto loyalty way to long even to the detriment of the team.

I believe it was a line audible by the personal protector when he saw the gunner uncovered, not a call by the coach. The play was wide open for the first down and the throw was on target, the guy just dropped the ball. whoever called the play--HC, special teams coach, personal protector--should get credit for having the guts to take a wide open play even though they are getting second guessed because some guy couldn't catch the fucking ball.

I thought that first interception should have been called a strip/fumble of the TE but I guess he never officially caught the ball before it was taken away. You failed to mention some fantastic kick/punt returns. Bengals special teams really outplayed the Broncos--with the exception of one Broncos kick return.

I live 2 hrs. from San Fran., so when I'm not rooting for my fav--Green Bay, I'll root for the local team.  But Harbaugh this year has been horrible.  He cannot manage either a clock or a quarterback.  Kapernick looked lost this year.  The team had a huge number of penalties.  I think they led the league in delay of game penalties.  That I lay at the feet of the coaches--and Harbaugh was the head coach.  Singletary was a huge disappointment as a coach, so in comparison, Harbaugh was waaaaay, better.  But there is something about him that I don't like--his play selection, and time management has always left me scratching my head.  But then, who will they get that is better--that could be a problem.  And when one pays a QB as much as they have, you cannot fire him--so the coach has to be the one to go.

And when one pays a QB as much as they have, you cannot fire him--so the coach has to be the one to go.
jk

Yeah, any time you're running plays in from the sideline clock management can be an issue. All it takes is a second guess as coach is ready to send him out, grabs his shoulder pad to change his mind, and you're up against it. No time to read the defense and change the play, no time for a long snap count, so many statagy scenarios are off limits. A quarterback that can call his own game is a huge plus. I reckon there are heaps of qbs that can, but control freak coaches need to put their stamp on the game.

Suh gets reinstated on a technicality (32 games without sufficient "incidents"). I'm no fan of the Packers, but Suh's a piece of shit and needs to go. The guy's already a great D-lineman, why do you have to seriously injure players?

suh is a POS, that one needs to hurt other players is proof that he does not think he can beat them head to head.

quick aside here. College…I thought Oregon would beat Fl state by about 12 or 14, they are so fast, but holy shit…they are slapping the sister in law, grabbing her by the back of her head and shoving their dicks right down her throat. Wow. 59/20 Oregon? Wow..still 7 plus left.

As a die hard Vikings fan, I normally root against Sharon Rogers and the Peckers.  I just find it hard to root for Jerry's Boys.  Hopefully it's a good game.  Would like to see at least one playoff nail biter.

My Bengals.... Well that's all I have to say.. Hopefully next year they won't have a gazillion injuries..

The ONLY game I give a rats ass about now is OSU v Oregon..  3rd string QB Cardell Jones in his second college game knocked off Alabama.. Quite the accomplishment for the young man.. Ought to be a good game..

Must have had a rough year for you, child beaters and all. :)))))  As a die hard Packers fan, Sharon and I had a good chuckle at your expense this year. :)  Must be tough rooting for a franchise whose biggest hero is 'Wrong Way' Marshall. I will admit that I rooted for the Purple People Eaters in each championship game and Super Bowl--disappointed each and every time.  Hell, the Red Sox finally won another--maybe the Vikings will to---one day.

There's hope.  I mean, we look like we have a solid head coach and a promising QB.  He won't be an Aaron Rogers, but he looks pretty savvy back there.  The defense looks better and with Zimmer it should keep improving.  I always though we should be trading AP like the Cowboys did with Herschel Walker back in the day.  Get a ton of draft picks and use that to build upon.  Now I doubt if we could get a 3rd round pick out of him.  But overall, yes, it's tough to be a Vikings fan.

It is true I am a life long Packer backer, but I have never 'hated' the Vikings.  Why?  Because the high school team I played for was called the Herlong Vikings.  Which is a bit odd, considering Herlong is in the middle of the desert. :)

Can't believe Steelers lost...waaaaa!!!
One thing to play your best, and the other team just plays that much better...but...to just give it away.

That was horrible.

In other news, I read an article that Katy Perry is going to 'diss' Taylor Swift at the SB half time show. Ha! I know that you're thankful I shared that with you all. ^_^

Meh. I have lost interest in football to the point that I'm sitting here instead of watching the super bowl. The NCAA championship game was more interesting because I like Urban Meyer. He used to coach at U of U and beat Alabama in a bowl game. The only complete game I watched this season was the one Green Bay lost for the NFC championship. I don't give a shit who wins the super bowl. I don't like Pete Carroll and I'm not a fan of New England, so -meh.

On the last offside penalty that got the Patriots off the goal line before the kneel down, it sure looked to me like Brady slapped the center's ass and the center jerked his head back, simulating the snap, and drawing the player off sides. I believe it should have been a penalty on the Patriots (either false start or snap infraction) but it was absolutely the smart thing for them to try at that point as another half the distance to the goal would have meant nothing while the five yards the other way was huge.

I stopped watching after the half because it looked like the 'Hawks were going to do like they did to Green Bay and come back and win. fortunately I watched the last part of the game. They thought they could beat the rookie defender with a pass play; kid made the play of his life and intercepted it. Post game they were calling it the worst call ever in a super bowl, but I don't know. I would still have used Lynch because that fucker is a tank, and a one yard play is almost a cinch to me.

And two tries at running it as well. If you fail on 2nd and 3rd down, I think you roll Wilson out with a run pass option. But yeah, unbelievable play selection given the down/distance/time remaining.
Today the Seahawks learned almost exactly how they made the packers feel two weeks ago. Karma?

'Off the track' a great idea? Just step away from the Sarah Palin juice and nobody has to get hurt..
What would have been a great idea would have been to bring in a road grader, perhaps another offensive tackle as a fullback and let me Lynch be the hero of the game. I almost feel bad for Chris Mathews.. The kid was working for Footlocker a few weeks ago..

Don't worry about Matthews. He is officially a hot commodity now. Fucker grabbed the onside kick in the Green Bay game, and that was enough to earn his keep. His two catches in the Super Bowl will be replayed ad infinitum into the future. He'll be around next year.
