Title: Big Rock closing in
Post by: aitm on February 14, 2013, 06:49:07 PM
You have heard of course of the small meteor going to skim the atmostphere at around 17 miles or so. What bothers me is according to the news, amateurs saw it first.  Time to fucking start worrying?

Just to be clear it is going to be about 17,000 miles away at it's closest point as opposed to 17.

Scientists have always said that its damn difficult to map every inch of the galaxy.    So there is always a possibility that something unseen can smash us.  Think of it like this, if it happens, you can tell your grandkids you were there when the earth was destroyed.  Oh, wait...

I used to work with a guy that was an avid amateur astronomer. He told me that amateurs have discovered many of the heavenly wonders, such as comets and whatnot. He also said that most of the professionals started as amateurs, so there is a strong connection between them. Fear not, aitm. Be glad there are eyes on the sky.

Meteor that exploded in Russia today was not small. 900 people were injured and 300 buildings were damaged.

Yeah, amateurs find a lot of stuff out there, because there's so many people pointing scopes up, and that's a good thing. Even pros are "amateurs" when they're at home looking up. While there's pros looking for near earth objects, most are looking into deep space because they have access to big telescopes including the ones orbitting the planet.

You probably shouldn't read Lucifer's Hammer then. Neat piece of science fiction, but not a good idea if you tend to lose sleep over that sort of thing.

It's a big sky.  Don't underestimate the so called "amateurs".  They discover a lot of stuff, and pass it on to the big observatories.  There is one amateur in Australia that holds the record for discovering super novas.  He just searches for super novas.  Weird, but they can get very good at what they do.

I read that the likelyhood of the professional community spotting an asteroid like the one 70 million years ago is good if you don't expect them to see it coming more than a couple days ahead of time.

Someone on Facebook claimed that this is the beginning of fulfillment of a Mayan prophecy about increasing disasters. I had to inform him that space rocks hit the Earth all the time, that there are thousands of craters all over the planet, some of them pretty damned big, proving that we are a moving target range for a whole lot of space debris. I also added that it is pure egotism to assume that a meteorite is the fulfillment of a prophecy just for the sake of human beings. Just because we happen to have cameras and video equipment, and millions of people can see the meteorite on the Internet, doesn't mean it was made just for us.

I fully expect to see the UFO nutters start claiming it was caused by aliens.

Jesus finally returned to the world!

Unfortunately, he came in a little too hard and burned up in reentry.

There are vastly more amateurs than professionals and they can cover much more sky.
