This is with my older laptop over 2.4G WiFi. My work laptop does 5G WiFi and it's a little faster. I'm paying for a 50M service so I can't complain. Comcast has 100M available around here, but it costs a little more and just how fast do I need to surf AF.com anyway?

LOL!

I think it has to do with how I use a powerline adapter to get internet to my room. It's basically acting like a rev-limiter for my internet. It's supposed to be at least 4x what I have. I have the slowest internet in my house

This is the price we pay for living in the sticks. And we get throttled back to near dial-up once we hit our data limit which happens sometime between the 5th and 10th of every month and lasts until the 15th when our plan rolls over into the next month's cycle. Such is life with satellite internet.

What really makes it more annoying is that Comcast is available to people who live about 3/10th of a mile from us but they won't bring the wire down our street.

Use to have that problem in the country when we had (I think it was still) DirectTV's satellite internet, yet people two farms over could get cable from town.

Being restricted to satellite internet is something I wouldn't wish on my greatest of enemies.

Believe it or not, the speed is more than enough for us. Honestly for 98% of the internet, any more speed than what we have is only useful for mine is bigger than yours style dick measuring contests. The thing that sucks about it is the 15GB/month data limit. Once we hit 15gigs we get throttled back to nothing for the rest of the cycle.

We actually have a 30GB/month account but that's split into two 15GB units. One during normal person hours and the other 15GB only comes into play between 2am and 8am. So for all practical purposes, we get 15gb a month to play with. So things like netflix and hulu are off limits for us. Even youtube will eat it up if we're not careful.

Your download speed is fast enough for netflix and gaming doesn't really take that much bandwidth.

I really like it so far, but I only got it hooked up last night so I haven't had a chance to really check it out yet. It has apps for most of the popular video streaming services, but I already had a prime account so that was a part of why I choose the Amazon device. Another big reason was it has a Toslink optical audio out port for hooking it up to my receiver. I didn't look at all the other options but most of them don't have the optical out.

Get a powerline adapter -- they aren't the greatest... but the reliability is definitely there!

It uses the internal power lines in your home to create a "wired" connection.  They aren't bad at all actually, I've had one.

Look up youtube reviews on the most current ones.

I had one from a few years ago. Because it was so old, it's limit was about 10 mpbs... Get a 500 mpbs adapter and you should be fine.

But the way it works, is you plug one in to a power outlet by your router, and you plug the ethernet cable in to that, then you plug the second one in to where your computer is and it will continue the ethernet on the other side, in this case it will be in your room. Just make sure the other outlet is on the same breaker as the other outlet. I don't think it would work otherwise.

Seconded. When I used to live with my dad, absolutely nothing would get a wifi signal into his office. Tried upgrading to 11n, using range extenders, etc. Nothing worked reliably and it got to the point where we were screaming at each other. Then we got one of those powerline adapters and the problem disappeared.
