Actually, it's based on the modern series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_%282008_team%29) that merely takes the name of the 70's series. The original series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardians_of_the_Galaxy_%281969_team%29) took place in the far future whereas the new series takes place in the present.
I'm glad Star-Lord is getting a film incarnation. Pity he's nothing like the character I remember. I guess someone at Marvel also liked this obscure, never popular character from the 70's and 80's and decided to bring him back recently. Too bad he's nothing like the original character and the movie version isn't much like either version.
