Title: State of the Union
Post by: AllPurposeAtheist on January 28, 2014, 06:13:49 PM
It's on in an hour or so,  but rubes are publicizing not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 "responses" staring their crazies. This ought to be a hoot.

I don't remember when they started having responses.
The State of the Union was and is a report from the Executive Branch to the Legislative Branch about how the year has gone and to suggest legislation that would improve things, but now it has become this crazy political thing where by conservaturds deny reality right after the president has told it.

It's a"media" event and campaigning on the public nickel which on the face of it sounds like a democratic idea,  but dig down a bit and it's grandstanding at best.

yeah, its actually required, I believe, to give your speech to the opposition a day early so they can hammer out their response.

I can't remember the president that actually went to Congress to give the address but it was first sent as a letter to both houses. I actually believe it was Hoover who was late with the letter and decided to just appear in person to deliver the address. Okay I found the history of the State of the Union.

Washington showed up to give the report in person but Jefferson just sent a written report.  It was Wilson I believe who started the speech thing again.  I wish they'd go back to mailing it in.

"oh look, now the democrats are clapping and standing while the republicans sit quietly. Was Boehner just scratching or secretly flipping off Obama behind his back? Was Joe Biden bored by the speech? "

obama's nowhere near the progressive I wish he was but the fact is if he could implement his ideas, we'd be better off. We can't though because of the worthless teabagger shitstains in the congress who block everything even their own ideas (when Obama agrees to them) out of spite for the president.

LOL I thought you were going with "required to report on the state of the union to congress."  I don't know who circulates these things beforehand or why, but I don't post my grocery list on the internet the day before I go shopping.  I don't see why either one of these events is of such significant import.

Last night was a convention of corrupt assholes dressed in their finest for an appearance on TV.  Today is just like Yesterday.  The government is still broken.

It's fascinating how people today seem to believe that they actually have a relevant influence on what their government does forgetting that the very nature of our system offers everything for sale. The only vote that counts is the monetary vote and it doesn't matter how much any activist yells about ethics and accountability. In a market system, every politician, every legislation and hence, every government is for sale. And even with the 20 trillion dollar bank bailouts starting in 2007 an amount of money which could have changed say, the global energy infrastructure to fully renewable methods instead of going to a series of institutions that literally do nothing to help society institutions that could be removed tomorrow with no recourse, the blind conditioning that politics and politicians exist for the public well-being still continues. The fact is, politics is a business - no different than any other in a market system and they care about their self-interest before anything else.

Official as in it is recognized as by the party and not just the words of an independent party.

His dad is someone I respect.  But you can't tell the difference between Rand Paul and Ron Paul, and you also can't tell the difference between Ron Paul and Ted Cruz  You think they are all the same person, one big amorphous blog of people who disagree with you, all the same person.

So, where in the constitution do you find the official response?  There is no such thing.  Anyone can make a response.  You can make a response and call it your official response.

Now you're just grasping at straws. The response is not in the Constitution. That isn't what makes the response official. What makes it official are the elected officials that state that their response IS an official response of their party's position to the State of the Union. When the amorphous blog quits acting in lockstep obedience to the same old failed tactic and ideas, I'll see them differently. As of right now they all obey the Koch brothers and FOX.

When he touched upon alternative power I was disappointed that he didn't mention nuclear. Is the anti nuclear movement really powerful enough here that building new reactors isn't an option? We have much safer, more efficient designs now, we just need to build the damn things.
