Just so long as you can take the environmental message, stuff it into a chicken breast with some Swiss cheese and have a nice cordon bleu.

*jarhead in mechsuit strolls out of a landed dropship, casually swats a guy in a wheelchair*
*guy in wheelchair falls down*
*jarhead spits on him*

James Cameron:  Hmmmm...not quite evil enough...

*jarhead in mechsuit uses flamethrowers on sacred grove while yelling "Hooorah!" and "Get some!"*

James Cameron: Masterpiece!

Exaggerated version of Sully getting out of the dropship on Pandora and a jarhead in mechsuit almost collides with him and gives him attitude.

The next movie will apparently feature a tribe of "ash people" Na'vi, who will be the antagonists. This will be to show that the Na'vi are not a wholly good people, but that there is good and evil in both humans and Na'vi. And also to avoid rehashing the first two movies with the Na'vi vs humans thing.

I also suspect they're setting up a redemption arc for Colonel Quaritch. Don't know why they would have left him alive otherwise.

I thought for sure that the sequel would have featured a more abashed and cautious human expedition (once bitten, twice shy) with yet another mix of scientists and military types.

They could even set up in a desolate or volcanic area for easy mining and geothermal energy.  Give themselves more of a buffer between them and unfriendly wildlife/natives.

From there, it wouldn't be hard to write a story where the human presence is increasingly disruptive and unwelcome and and a source of conflict,  like naval vessel communications unknowingly causing whale deaths or overtures with the Na'vi causing a diplomatic incident.

Then there's a power struggle between the militarists and the scientists in act 2, triggering full-scale conflict in act 3 (conflict that is not fully resolved by the end of the movie)

Bam, another blockbuster with plenty of sequel potential.

I don't think the American (I assume) military would take such a reserved approach. If anything, they'd be like, "They hit us, we hit back twice as hard." Especially since they have the technology to upload the minds of the fallen into their avatars. Death has little meaning to them. I believe Quaritch said as much. Even if he died again, they'd just bring him back.

Yeah, that mind uploading tech is a big time help.  And not only that, but into superior bodies without that whole suffocation issue - this is a HUGE advantage and a giant philosophical can of worms. (Westworld, anyone?)

With mind uploading, it's hard to imagine them losing a war, since they can just mass print their soldiers like the Riftborn.  (Couldn't resist the Endless Space 2 reference).  They could lose every battle and still win the war through sheer attrition.

Their only real constraint is production - their ability to harvest resources and produce military equipment, which apparently is 100% automated and fairly rapid.

Given all this, it's pretty tough to imagine the Earth being in such a sorry state - they have the technology to fix it, the only thing they're lacking is the collective will to - ohhhhh.  Well played, James Cameron, well played.

I'm pretty sure it's all an allegory for something or other.

I've heard rumors from my friends on the Sagami Wan that an anime series is being negotiated. No idea how far that's along.

There's a video game coming soon. Not sure how it'll connect to the movies' stories. I'm keeping an eye on it.

If it doesn't begin with the main character uploading themselves into a avatar body (customizable by the player) then I don't want it.

No confirmation on whether we can customize our character or not, so I wouldn't hold my breath. I think the main character is a true Na'vi, not an Avatar. However, the game will release exclusively on next gen hardware. So unlike a ton of other games released in the last few years, they won't be held back by previous gen hardware.

Freaking finally. I understood why games were doing that, because no one could even buy a PS5 or XBOX One X. But now the shortage is finally over, so we can finally actually get next gen games.
