Title: Isaiah 58:6-7 - "Set the oppresesd free; share food; help migrants."
Post by: Shiranu on September 18, 2022, 09:38:51 PM
As part of my attempt to start reading the Bible, I have been finding passages that interest me and reading them first to motivate me, when I found Isaiah 58:6...

Quote"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
    and break every yoke?

Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Republicans literally shaking right now that the liberals even rewrote the Bible to put this garbage in it.

If you've read any of the Bible at all you've read more than the vast majority of Christians.

On Reddit, I saw a proposition to start referring to Republicans as "CINOs." Otherwise known as, "Christians in Name Only." While they certainly have the Old Testament cruelty, hypocrisy, and ignorance about how the world works down to a T, their values are almost completely opposite to the things Jesus said to be important. The religion has gone from hating the rich to worshipping them. They went from selling their possessions and giving it to the poor to demonizing the poor for being "lazy" or having "too many kids." Jesus cast out from the temple people who were there to make profit. Churches today have gift shops, coffee shops, and they are in every sense of the word businesses, in it for profit. Jesus was a pacifist. Republicans love guns and killing foreigners, and stand up for police when they abuse their power. Jesus told the tale of the Good Samaritan, saying that we should help strangers, with no expectation of a reward or to be paid back. One of Republican's greatest fear is brown refugees displaced by war (which we helped stir up) coming to America for help.

Not to mention, they white-washed Jesus. They wouldn't even recognize him if he did come back. They'd accuse him of being the Anti-Christ, and I suspect the vitriol would be mutual.

Not isolated to the US. Just look at all those fine Russian Orthodox Christian soldiers helping out in Ukraine. /sarc

I like that "CINO", it's quite appropriate.

Yeah, that's my first time seeing CINO, but it's already my go-to description for these type of people.

I have to admit, I do have a morbid fascination that these people can convince themselves they are Christians, that follow the word of Christ - I would almost like to spend a day in their head just to see what type of gibberish has to be flying through it to come to that conclusion.

When people say to me they're Christian it doesn't tell me much other than they want to be identified with that group. They could be conservative or progressive, for or against abortion, generous or stingy, for or against lying. It doesn't mean they go to church. It doesn't mean they pray. It doesn't even mean they believe Jesus Christ physically came back from the dead-- some Christians believe the resurrection is an allegory. It's like hearing someone is from a certain country... It doesn't tell me much about that individual.

Anyway, even if someone is living a life that Jesus Christ would approve of it doesn't mean much to me because I don't consider Jesus Christ someone worthy of emulating.

Being a christian is like being a Batman fan. Which version of Batman are they a fan of? Adam West? Michael Keaton? That other guy? The comics? Which comics? Dark Knight Returns? They one where Batman wore multiple colored costumes to keep people from noticing that Robin had broken his arm? Batman covers such a gambit, you have no idea what kind of nerd you're avoiding.
