Title: New surround system with height speakers

Quote from: GSOgymrat on February 18, 2022, 02:23:23 PMIf you have the equipment to take advantage of UHD video and Dolby Atmos audio, UHD Blu-ray is the way to go. LOTR looks AMAZING. I have a small collection of my all-time favorite movies on UHD Blu-ray. There is a local bookstore that sells used Blu-rays and I have found some terrific deals.

This comment started me down a path that cost me some serious $. Serious for me anyway... ;)

First I bought a pair of Wharfedale D300 3d Atmos speakers that I tried sitting on top of my Lintons. That wasn't great so I swapped out my old Energy speakers for a Kef q250 center and 4 each q150 surrounds and I moved the D300's up high. That gave this 5.2.2 setup. The most my Sony STR-DN1080 will support.

I still wasn't happy so I just got 3 more pairs of the q150's, plus an Emotiva MC1 13.2 channel processor, A7 amp, and A6 amp. The speakers came yesterday and the electronics arrived today.

The ultimate goal is a 7.2.6 system. It's going to take me awhile to get it all put together because I need to fish 8 more pairs of speaker wires through the walls.

Dude!  Sick! What are you using for a media player?

Take your pick. The Samsung TV will play the ripped DVDs right off NAS, but I have to go back and rip some of them again because I apparently didn't rip the right audio file on some of them so no Audio on a handful of the movies when I'm using the TV to stream them. Most work just fine though.

I also have a little BeeLink PC running Windows with VLC, and a Raspberry Pi 4 running VLC that work for video or audio files. The Pi is connected to a Tone Board 2 Pro DAC for music playback on a sperate dedicated music system. My Sony UHD Blu Ray player plays SACD, but I am trying to figure out how to rip the DSD files off the SACD's so I can do away with feeding individual SACD's and just steam those files too.

Yes, old habits die hard.

I am having a hard time getting someone to help fish the speaker wire. None of the commercial guys to be interested in such a small job, and I'm too damn old and fat to crawl up under the house. Not to mention it is a two person job. Plus the rear wall has fire stops so I'm going to have to cut a hole in the drywall big enough to notch the studs so we can get a wire past them. That is going to mean patching the holes and painting the whole wall. One of the younger than me guys at work is going to come by and help one afternoon. I'm still waiting on some cables to get here, but should have this thing up and running in a couple of more weeks.

Finally got everything together. I didn't really like the the results of the sound setup with the software that came with the Emotiva processor, but I borrowed a good sound meter from a friend and set everything up manually now I really like it. I can here the rain overhead in Blade Runner.
